Doncic's father slams Mavericks 'hypocrisy' and 'secrecy' over Lakers trade

The Dallas Mavericks chose to trade Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers, but his father was not happy with how they handled the deal.

Luka Doncic's father has accused the Dallas Mavericks of "hypocrisy" and criticized their "secrecy" after the Serb's stunning trade to the Los Angeles Lakers.

Reports on Saturday emerged saying Dallas were sending Doncic, the face of their franchise, to the Lakers, with Anthony Davis coming the other way as part of the blockbuster deal.

Doncic is currently injured and has not played since Christmas Day due to a calf injury, and has played just 22 games this season, averaging 28.1 points, 8.3 rebounds and 7.8 assists.

Upon leaving, the 25-year-old's message included no mention of the Dallas organization, thanking the fans and the community, but his father, Sasa, did not hold back with his criticism.

"I understand there comes a moment when you disagree with a certain philosophy," Sasa Doncic said, as translated by Arena Sport. "You don't like this or that player, all good - I get it.

"But I think that exactly this secrecy, or should I say from some individuals, maybe even hypocrisy, this hurts me personally. Because I think that Luka absolutely doesn't deserve this."

Last season, Doncic played 70 regular-season games for Dallas, averaging 37.5 minutes per game, while also featuring in 22 postseason games on their run to the NBA Finals.

However, this season he has been hampered by injuries, with some reports suggesting the Mavericks were concerned over his conditioning, which was part of the reason they chose to approach the Lakers about the trade for Davis.

"[Luka's conditioning] wasn't even a problem last year since, I am saying again, one individual said he's not fit enough," Sasa added.

"That he played, I don't know, 100 games - practically 40 minutes with two or three players constantly on him.

"That he was beaten, and you say such things about him - I feel that this is very unfair from certain individuals. You traded him, stand by your actions but don't look for excuses or alibis, that's it."
