Champions Trophy: Ravindra and Bracewell lead New Zealand into semi-finals
New Zealand booked their place in the semi-finals of the Champions Trophy, with Bangladesh's elimination now confirmed.
New Zealand booked their place in the semi-finals of the Champions Trophy with a five-wicket victory over Bangladesh on Monday.
Michael Bracewell played his part in limiting Bangladesh early on before Rachin Ravindra propelled them to victory with a sublime century in Rawalpindi.
Bracewell took 4-26, the best bowling figures by a New Zealand spinner in the Champions Trophy, starting off by sending Tanzid Hasan packing for 24.
Najmul Hossain Shanto (77) anchored Bangladesh's innings, but he was caught by Bracewell, who had also dismissed Towhid Hridoy (seven), Mushfiqur Rahim (two) and Mahmudullah (two) in quick succession with the ball.
Jaker Ali (45) also offered some resistance before being run out by Tom Latham, with New Zealand confident after limiting Bangladesh to 236-9.
Bangladesh made a brilliant start to their defence, though, with Will Young bowled for a duck by Taskin Ahmed at the end of the first over.
New Zealand dangerman Kane Williamson then edged Nahid Rana's full ball through to Mushfiqur Rahim.

However, Ravindra (112) got the co-hosts back on track. He put together a 57-run partnership with Devon Conway (30) for the third wicket, before Latham (55) ensured the momentum was firmly back with New Zealand.
It took just five more overs after the latter was run out by Mahmudullah for New Zealand to get over the line, with Glenn Phillips (21) and Bracewell (11) both scoring a four each off the final two balls to take them over the target with 23 deliveries to spare.
New Zealand are top of Group A having won both of their matches, while Bangladesh's fate is sealed.
The Black Caps' win also means co-hosts Pakistan are out – they will face Bangladesh in a dead rubber on Thursday.
Data Debrief: Brilliant Bracewell helps Black Caps soar
Bracewell's fast start ensured New Zealand were in control from the off, with his career-best effort bettering Paul Wiseman's 4-45 in the Champions Trophy against Zimbabwe in 2000 for the best figures by a Black Caps spinner in the competition.
All four wickets were of the top-six Bangladesh batters. The only other New Zealand spinner to dismiss at least four of the opposition's top-six in a men's ODI in the last 20 years is Ish Sodhi (also against Bangladesh in 2023).
It was fitting that Bracewell hit the winning runs, though Ravindra can take plenty of plaudits.
Ravindra's knock, which came from 105 deliveries and included 13 boundaries, on Monday took him beyond the 1,000 mark in ODIs. He is now on 1,082 runs in the format, across 26 innings.
