Jessica Pegula's winning streak came to an abrupt end, as she was beaten by Elina Svitolina in a rain-delayed Indian Wells Open last-16 tie.

The former world number three came from behind to prevail 5-7 6-1 6-2 against the fourth seed during a contest that lasted just under two hours, while enduring a three-hour delay due to heavy rain.

Pegula, fresh from triumphing in Austin earlier this month, rescued four break points at 3-2 down in the opening set, before breaking in the 11th game on the way to drawing first blood.

However, Svitolina responded superbly with a dominant second set to level. She then broke immediately in the third, before the rain hit and suspended play for three hours.

Yet, the 23rd seed did not let the break halt her momentum, and she picked up from she left off to sprint over the line, setting up a quarter-final clash with teenage sensation Mirra Andreeva.

"It definitely was not easy with all the conditions and the rain, stop and start," Svitolina said. "[I] Warmed up maybe 10 times today.

"It was not an easy thing to do, but everyone is in the same conditions, so you have to just adjust and go again. [I'm] very happy with the performance overall."

Data Debrief: Pegula streak halted

The fourth seed had no answer as she saw an end to a run of seven successive WTA Tour-level match wins.

There was no stopping Svitolina as she soared to her first WTA 1000 quarter-final since the 2021 Italian Open, and first at Indian Wells since two years previously.

The Ukrainian converted five of 12 break points in her sixth match against an American opponent this season, in which she now holds a 4-2 record over such players.
