Rybakina stunned by Krueger in Miami opener, Paolini and Zheng progress
Elena Rybakina was the first big casualty at the Miami Open, but Jasmine Paolini and Qinwen Zheng booked their place in the third round.
Ashlyn Krueger delivered the biggest upset of the Miami Open so far by beating seventh seed Elena Rybakina across three thrilling sets.
Krueger fended off a second-set surge from her opponent to emerge a 6-4 2-6 6-4 victor against Rybakina, completing the win in one hour and 50 minutes on Thursday.
The American also won her first career match against a top-10 opponent after having lost the previous six such matches without winning a single set.
Krueger was forced to withstand a stunning 22-point winning streak on serve by Rybakina, who won all 16 such points in the second set to take the match the distance.
But Krueger was able to recover and snatch a crucial break of serve in the fifth game of the decider, closing out the contest with a fierce serve.
Krueger will face Leylah Fernandez in the third round of the competition after the Canadian battled to a 7-6 6-3 triumph over Alycia Parks earlier in the day.

There were no such struggles for Qinwen Zheng and Jasmine Paolini, with the pair booking their place in the next round following respective straight-set victories.
Zheng kicked off her tournament with a 6-1 7-5 win over Lauren Davis, setting up a meeting with either Taylor Townsend or Yulia Putintseva.
Indeed, she became the second Chinese player to reach the round of 32 in the women's singles at the Miami Open in three consecutive years after Li Na between 2012 and 2014.
Paolini, meanwhile, stormed past Rebecca Sramkova with a 6-4 6-4 victory in one hour and 41 minutes.
