Wolves forward Cunha gets extra one-match ban

Wolves will have to do without Matheus Cunha for their next two Premier League games after he saw his suspension extended by one match.

Wolves forward Matheus Cunha has been banned for an additional game following his red card in an FA Cup tie against Bournemouth earlier this month.

Cunha was sent off late in extra time as Wolves suffered a penalty shoot-out defeat at the Vitality Stadium, having earlier scored a stunning long-range equaliser in a 1-1 draw.

The Brazil international lashed out at Bournemouth left-back Milos Kerkez on three occasions and had to be escorted down the tunnel by members of Vitor Pereira's staff.

Cunha was banned for three games for violent conduct and was also charged with acting in an improper manner, a charge he accepted.

He has now seen an extra game added to his ban as well as being fined £50,000, having already missed a 1-1 draw with Everton and Saturday's 2-1 win at Southampton.

Cunha – who also served a two-match ban in January after lashing out at an Ipswich Town security guard following a 2-1 loss to the Tractor Boys in December – will miss Wolves' next two Premier League games, a home clash with West Ham and the reverse fixture at Ipswich, before returning against Tottenham on April 13.

Following last week's win at St Mary's, Wolves are nine points clear of fellow relegation candidates Ipswich and Leicester City with 27 points to play for.

Cunha has been influential in their bid to stave off the drop, scoring 13 goals in 26 Premier League matches this term, with only Raul Jimenez ever netting more in a single campaign in the competition for Wolves (17 in 2019-20).

The 25-year-old signed a new contract to remain at Molineux earlier this year, but that deal is believed to have a £62.5million release clause, and he has been linked with Arsenal, Liverpool and Nottingham Forest.
