Leeds United 4-0 Bristol City: Rampant hosts close in on Championship title

Leeds United hammered Bristol City in their final home game of the Championship season, keeping hopes of the league title alive.

Leeds United went back to the top of the table and put themselves in the box seat for the Championship title after blowing Bristol City away to win 4-0 on Monday.

The match itself was one of utter domination with Daniel Farke's already-promoted side not giving them a sniff at all.

Leeds threatened plenty in the opening stages, with Jayden Bogle failing to get on the end of Junior Firpo's ball across the face of goal in the fourth minute.

Manor Solomon then forced an impressive save from Bristol City goalkeeper Max O'Leary on 10 minutes before Joel Piroe strayed offside when Solomon had the ball in the net six minutes later.

Ao Tanaka did eventually open the scoring on 22 minutes and it had been coming. The Japan international finished delightfully at the back post on the half-volley from Solomon's cross.

There was no let up from the hosts, who nearly doubled their lead eight minutes before half-time from Brendan Aaronson after he had shown brilliant individual skill to weave into a shooting opportunity.

The game itself was over as a contest 10 minutes into the second half when Willy Gnonto converted after being picked out by Piroe's long pass.

Bristol City, meanwhile, had to wait until the 75th minute for their first shot on goal, with Scott Twine putting a tame effort wide.

Substitute Largie Ramazani wrapped things up with a goal just 36 seconds after coming on as a substitute before adding a second in stoppage time.

For the visitors, Marcus McGuane had Bristol City's only shot on target in the 93rd minute, which was easily held by goalkeeper Karl Darlow.

The victory moves Leeds onto 97 points and they will now travel to already-relegated Plymouth Argyle on final day knowing that a win will deliver them the Championship title. For Bristol City, they need to beat relegation-threatened Preston North End to confirm a spot in the play-offs.

Data debrief: Leeds march on after devastating performance

Bristol City were restricted to just three shots during the match at Elland Road, with their first coming in the 75th minute – their lowest total in the Championship this season.

The visitors, in fact, recorded an xG of 0 in the first half and just 0.07 xG in the second half.

Leeds, meanwhile, had 73% of the ball and attempted 833 passes during the match – their highest total of the season.
