Arsenal 1-1 Brentford: Wissa goal pushes Liverpool closer to title

Liverpool only need nine more points to win the Premier League title, after Arsenal were held to a 1-1 draw by Brentford.

Yoane Wissa's goal earned Brentford a 1-1 draw with Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday, pushing Liverpool closer to the Premier League title.

Four days after thrashing Real Madrid 3-0 in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie, Arsenal needed over an hour to break down Thomas Frank's stubborn visitors.

Thomas Partey finished across Mark Flekken after the Gunners' midweek hero Declan Rice led a devastating counter-attack from a Brentford corner.

Arsenal had earlier seen a potential opener disallowed using semi-automated offside technology – making its Premier League debut this weekend following tests in the FA Cup.

Kieran Tierney headed Ethan Nwaneri's searching cross home, but replays showed the Scot to have come back from an offside position.

Partey's goal was a rare highlight as Arsenal struggled for creativity, and Brentford got back on level terms in the 74th minute.

From the second phase of a half-cleared corner, Michael Kayode's dinked cross was headed back across goal by Nathan Collins, and Wissa improvised brilliantly to finish on the turn.

Substitute Bukayo Saka curled just wide in stoppage time as Arsenal failed to find a winner, and they were forced to finish the game with 10 men due to an injury to Jorginho, which occurred after the hosts had used all their substitutions.

A second successive league draw for Arsenal means Liverpool need a maximum of nine more points to secure the title, while Brentford climb above Crystal Palace to go 11th.

Data debrief: Landmark strike for Wissa

Wissa's goal was his 15th in the Premier League this season, putting him one behind his team-mate Bryan Mbeumo, on 16.

Brentford are the first team to have two players score 15 goals in the competition this campaign, while Wissa is the first player to ever net 15 non-penalty goals for the Bees in a single Premier League season.

Wissa is also up to 50 goal involvements in the Premier League (41 goals, nine assists), with Mbeumo (64) the only other Brentford player to bring up a half-century.

Brentford certainly made the most of their limited opportunities, having been held to an expected goals (xG) total of just 0.19 – the fourth-lowest by a team that has avoided defeat in a Premier League game this season.

Two of the other three also came against Arsenal – Everton had 0.09 xG and Fulham had 0.16 xG when the sides held the Gunners to draws in December.

Arsenal have now dropped 16 points from winning positions this season – just one fewer than they did in the past two campaigns combined (eight in 2022-23, nine in 2023-24).
