Tottenham 3-1 AZ (3-2 agg): Odobert sends hosts into Europa League quarter-finals

Tottenham overcame a first-leg deficit against AZ in the Europa League, booking a meeting with Eintracht Frankfurt in the quarter-finals.

Wilson Odobert's brace helped Tottenham earn a 3-1 victory over AZ in the Europa League last-16 second leg on Thursday, sending them into the quarter-finals.

A dismal display in the first leg meant Spurs had to come from behind in the tie, and they successfully overturned their 1-0 deficit to set up a meeting with Eintracht Frankfurt.

The hosts made a bright start, putting AZ under pressure in the early stages, but it took until the 26th minute for them to find the breakthrough.

Son Heung-min chased down Wouter Goes to win the ball on the left, and Dominic Solanke coolly squared it into Odobert, who guided it into the roof of the net to level on aggregate.

James Maddison then put Spurs in front in the tie for the first time, playing a one-two with Son to open up space in the AZ box before firing a powerful effort past Rome-Jayden Owusu-Oduro and into the top-right corner.

AZ came to life soon after, with Jordy Clasie's effort whistling past the post before Peer Koopmeiners profited from a defensive mix-up between Lucas Bergvall and Odobert to drill a shot into the far corner of the net.

They were only back on level terms in the tie for 11 minutes though, as Odobert grabbed his second.

Solanke flicked on Djed Spence's cross at the near post and the Frenchman stuck out a leg to send Spurs into the last eight.

Data Debrief: The kids are alright

Odobert had never scored for Tottenham before this match, but his brace could not have come at a better time as it steered his side into the next round.

His goals mean Spurs are the first side in major European competition history to have five players under the age of 21 score a goal in the same season (Will Lankshear, Damola Ajayi, Mikey Moore, Dane Scarlett and Odobert).

The Frenchman is also the youngest Spurs player (20 years, 105 days) with two goals in a major European game since Chris McGrath in November 1973 against Aberdeen in the UEFA Cup (18 years, 343 days).

There was a slice of history for Archie Gray too.

Aged 19 years and one day, he became the youngest member of his family to play 10 games in major European competitions, younger than his grandfather Frank (20 years, 129 days) and great-uncle Eddie (19 years, 259 days) were on their 10th games.
