Huijsen receives maiden senior Spain call-up for Nations League quarters
Dean Huijsen is one of two players receiving their first senior Spain call-up ahead of their Nations League clash against the Netherlands.
Bournemouth centre-back Dean Huijsen has been called up by Spain for the first time for their upcoming Nations League quarter-final tie against the Netherlands.
Huijsen, who has starred for Andoni Iraola's team this term, has replaced Barcelona's Inigo Martinez, who picked up a knee injury in their 4-2 win over Atletico Madrid on Sunday.
The 19-year-old represented the Netherlands at youth level before switching to Spain's Under-21's in March 2024, going on to make six appearances.
Huijsen's displays have led the Cherries to 10th in the Premier League, with the possibility of achieving European football this season a real possibility for Bournemouth.
Across his 23 outings in the top-flight, only Antoine Semenyo (52) and Illia Zabarnyi (57) have won more aerial duels for Iraola's side than Huijsen (48).
He has also completed 884 passes, a total only bettered by Lewis Cook (918) and Zabarnyi (1,030), while he has also helped the Cherries keep five clean sheets when playing.
"Inigo Martinez has been ruled out of the Spanish national team squad due to a right knee problem," the Royal Spanish Football Federation said in a statement.
"In his place, (Spain manager) Luis de la Fuente has called up Dean Huijsen of Bournemouth."

Spain will also be without Barcelona midfielder Marc Casado, who suffered a knee ligament injury against Atletico and could be sidelined for at least two months.
Aleix Garcia of Bayer Leverkusen has been named as Casado's replacement in the squad.
Real Madrid defender Raul Asencio has also received his maiden call-up from Spain for the games against the Netherlands after a string of impressive displays for Los Blancos.
Spain, who won last year's European Championship, travel to Rotterdam to face the Dutch in the first leg of the Nations League quarters on Thursday before hosting them at the Mestalla Stadium on March 23.
