Everton 3-0 Crystal Palace: Holmgaard stars in emphatic home win
Everton ran out comfortable 3-0 winners in a comfortable victory over Crystal Palace in the Women's Super League on Saturday.
Sara Holmgaard scored one and set up two more as Everton ran out 3-0 winners over Crystal Palace at Walton Hall Park.
The Toffees moved up to seventh in the Women's Super League, with Holmgaard their inspiration on Saturday.
It was a spirited performance from rock-bottom Palace, who were awarded a penalty shortly after Everton's second goal when Katie Stengel was fouled by Justine Vanhaevermaet, only for referee Adewunmi Soneye to change his mind after blowing the whistle.
Buoyed by a 3-1 victory over Aston Villa last time out, Palace started well, but it was the hosts who broke the deadlock when Holmgaard’s floated corner was met by Vanhaevermaet, whose header was unable to be kept out by a defender on the line.
Then, just 22 seconds after the restart, a delightful Gago cross was glanced into the bottom left corner by Holmgaard.
Everton wrapped up the win in stoppage time, with Holmgaard involved again as she set up Gago, who brilliantly jinked past her marker before stroking a calm finish beyond Shae Yanez.
Brian Sorensen’s side travel to third-placed Manchester United next, while Palace’s task only gets tougher as they host Arsenal.
A dominant performance on home soil!

Data Debrief: Holmgaard hits the heights
Holmgaard now has a team-leading three assists to her name this season after an excellent performance in which she turned on the style from full-back.
As well as getting on the scoresheet, she created a game-leading four chances in total, while only her team-mate Maren Mjelde (105) registered more touches than the Dane's 99. Holmgaard also put in eight crosses.
Everton are unbeaten in their last 10 WSL games against newly promoted opposition (W6 D3), since a 3-2 home defeat to Manchester United in February 2020.
Palace, meanwhile, have now failed to score in eight of their 17 games this season. Only Leicester City (nine) have failed to score more often, and the Eagles generated chances worth just 0.67 expected goals in this defeat, while Everton finished with 1.39 xG.
