Medvedev stunned by Munar in Miami second round

2023 Miami Open champion Daniil Medvedev made an early exit to this year's tournament, with Nick Kyrgios also exiting in the second round.

Daniil Medvedev suffered a shock straight-sets defeat at the Miami Open, crashing out in the second round to Jaume Munar.

The Spaniard outplayed the world number eight in their 78-minute clash, earning a 6-2 6-3 win to advance to the next round.

Munar had never claimed a top-10 win at an ATP Masters 1000 event or a major, but looked composed in the first set after a four-game winning streak.

He took the lead after converting his third set-point attempt and remained in control throughout the second set, forcing five break points, though he converted just one.

He missed a chance to win it with match point at 5-2, but after Medvedev, who made 32 unforced errors overall, failed to convert either of the break points he forced in the final game, Munar got over the line.

Munar's last top-10 win prior to this match came back in Tokyo 2022, where he knocked out Casper Ruud. He is also into the third round at a Masters 1000 for the first time since 2023 (Madrid).

"It means a lot," Munar said. "I am feeling great after all the work I have put in to have a tournament like this.

"I feel really comfortable here, and I have been playing great this year on hard courts. It got a little bit tight at the end, but I am happy with the performance, and it means a lot."

Elsewhere, Nick Kyrgios also made a second-round exit after suffering a straight-sets defeat to Karen Khachanov.

The Australian had won his first match since 2022 in the first round but could not extend his stay in Miami as Khachanov came out on top in a 7-6 (7-3) 6-0 victory.

There was little to split the two in the first set, with both players holding serve, but the Russian found the edge in the tie-break, reeling off five straight points to gain the upper hand.

Kyrgios could not find a way back in after that, losing all six games in the second set, with Khachanov converting all three break points with relative ease.

"Honestly, today was a big stepping stone," Kyrgios said in a post on X.

"Karen Khachanov was just too good. We played a great first set but encouraging that I could finish two matches this week!

"Plenty to work on. Thank you, old friend and good luck for the rest of the tournament."
