Knicks 'just kept believing' in shock defeat of Celtics

The New York Knicks stunned the Boston Celtics on Monday, surging back to win 108-105 in overtime and take a lead in their playoff series.

Jalen Brunson explained the message was simple when the New York Knicks fell 20 points behind to the Boston Celtics.

The Knicks stunned the reigning NBA champions Boston on Monday, hitting back to win 108-105 in overtime.

New York called timeout when they were 20 points down, and asked what their plan was at that stage, Brunson said: "We told each other to just keep believing; keep firing. Keep sticking together and chipping away.

"There wasn't going to be a 20-point shot, so we had to keep chipping away possession by possession."

Brunson finished with 29 points, a total matched by teammate OG Anunoby, who enjoyed the highest-scoring playoff game of his career.

While Derrick White and Jrue Holiday forced overtime, Anunoby, Karl-Anthony Towns and Mikal Bridges hit big scores in the extra time.

"We're just going to keep fighting until the clock hits zero. We've been showing that," Bridges said.

The Celtics, meanwhile, attempted a playoff-record 60 3-pointers but missed 45 of those attempts.

"Some of 'em felt good, some of 'em felt like we maybe forced the issue," said Jaylen Brown, who went 1-of-10 on 3-pointers.

"Definitely our rhythm and our timing was a little bit off. We got a lot of great looks, but it may be some truth [to shooting too many] today.

"In those moments when the other team has got momentum you can't just fire up 3s to break up momentum.

"You got to get to the free throw line, get to the paint, get to the basket, maybe get an easy two. You hit some free throws and then maybe the next 3-pointer feels a little bit better."

Celtics star Jayson Tatum wishes Boston had been a little more conservative with their 3-point attempts.

"Obviously in hindsight, if we could go back, we'd probably drive the ball a little bit more because we missed a lot of shots tonight," he said.

"You can always go back and look and see what you should have done differently."
