Hudson-Odoi coy on potential England call-up after stellar Forest season

Nottingham Forest will continue their quest for a top four finish at Portman Road this weekend when they take on lowly Ipswich Town.

Callum Hudson-Odoi has played down the possibility of earning an England call-up under Thomas Tuchel after his fine season for Nottingham Forest this year.

Hudson-Odoi scored the winner in Forest's triumph over reigning champions Manchester City last weekend, a win that kept their hopes of Champions League football alive.

The former Chelsea forward has played a pivotal role in Forest's remarkable rise in 2024-25, notching seven goal involvements (five goals, two assists) in the Premier League, a total only bettered by Anthony Elanga, Morgan Gibbs-White (both 11) and Chris Wood (21).

New Three Lions boss Tuchel has been keeping tabs on all the England players who qualify ahead of announcing his first squad later this month, and Hudson-Odoi, who has made three appearances for his national team, said he would be ready should the opportunity arise.

"I can't tell you the future," said Hudson-Odoi, when quizzed about his chances. "I can't comment on what's going to happen…if I'm going to play for them or not.

"I'm ready for whatever happens. I just need to make sure I'm doing it on the pitch for the club. As you can see, they're here, watching us - so that shows we're doing something right, to be in those sorts of talks or contention.

"We need to keep believing in ourselves, trying to achieve as much as possible. And hopefully the boys get picked for England - it would be amazing if they did."

Ipswich Town, meanwhile, were on the end of a late defeat to Crystal Palace last time out, with Ismaila Sarr scoring the only goal in the 82nd minute at Selhurst Park.

The Tractor Boys showed plenty of grit and determination in the contest, but their lack of a clinical edge in the final third proved costly, with their 15 shots amounting to an expected goals (xG) total of 1.48 to Palace's 3.26 from their 19 efforts.

Ipswich now find themselves six points adrift of safety with 10 games of their season remaining, with manager Kieran McKenna saying that their 17th loss of the campaign was "sickening".

"It's a sickening result," McKenna said. "To come away from home and be as competitive as we were against a strong Crystal Palace side who have been in good form for a good period of time, to do it in a week when we've been away and played 120 minutes in the FA Cup on Monday night with a depleted squad.

"To come and compete as we did, is another reflection of a lot of good things in the group that they're showing. But we also know that we have to keep working to turn those margins in our favour.

"I know that's been the story for a lot of the season, but that's the only path forward. That's the reality of it. We've still got a group that’s learning and growing and developing.

"Julio Enciso was starting his third game, Jaden Philogene's a few games into his career here. We've got a large majority of the group who are very, very early in their Premier League experiences and careers, and they're learning all the time."

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Ipswich – Leif Davis

Davis has equipped to life well in the Premier League and has arguably been Ipswich's standout performer despite a difficult recent run in the top-flight.

He has created a team-high 50 chances in the Premier League this season, which has brought him two assists, while only Sam Morsy (29) has won more tackles than Davis (26).

Nottingham Forest – Morgan Gibbs-White

Gibbs-White's assist for Hudson-Odoi against Man City last time out took him level with Bryan Roy for Premier League goal involvements for Forest (39 – 15 goals, 24 assists).

Only Ian Woan (44) has had a hand in more for the club, and the England international will be keen to add to his tally at Portman Road.

MATCH PREDICTION: NOTTINGHAM FOREST WIN

Though favoured by Opta's data-led simulations, Forest have lost each of their last three Premier League away games, more than they had in their previous 13 on the road (W9 D2 L2).

Forest are also looking to complete the league double over Ipswich for the first time since 2016-17 in the Championship. They also won both meetings with the Tractor Boys the last time they met in the Premier League (1994-95, with Forest finishing third and Ipswich being relegated).

Between March 1996 and the end of the 2022-23 campaign, Forest won none of their 15 Premier League games against promoted sides (D9 L6). Since the start of last season, they're unbeaten in 10 such matches (W7 D3), winning the last six in a row.

And they come up against an Ipswich team who are the only side in England's top four tiers without a league win so far in 2025 (D2 L7). It's also their longest run without a league victory from the start of a calendar year in their history.

Ipswich also haven't won any of their last 14 Premier League games against sides in the top three of the table since a 1-0 win against Liverpool at Anfield in January 1995 (D2 L12). Those 12 defeats in that run have come by an aggregate score of 40-3.

But they will be hoping Portman Road can help them this weekend. They have lost just one of their last seven home league games against Forest (W4 D2), while this is the first time they're hosting them in the top-flight since a 1-0 loss in August 1994.

OPTA WIN PROBABILITY

Ipswich – 27.5%

Draw – 26.1%

Nottingham Forest – 46.4%
