'Geniuses' Doncic and James will adapt after seismic trade

Luka Doncic is joining Los Angeles in a trade that has stunned everyone connected with the NBA, including Lakers beat reporter Khobi Price.

The Los Angeles Lakers' trade for Luka Doncic is the biggest in NBA history and the five-time All-Star will have no issues adapting to playing alongside LeBron James.

That is the view of Lakers beat reporter Khobi Price, who believes Doncic is one of few players capable of being a one-man offense.

The Lakers have sent their leading points scorer for the season, Anthony Davis, as well as Max Christie and a 2029 first-round draft pick, to the Dallas Mavericks in order to acquire Doncic, Maxi Kleber and Markieff Morris.

Doncic has averaged 28.1 points, 8.3 rebounds and 7.8 assists in 2024-25, though he has been sidelined with a calf injury since Christmas Day.

The deal has left players, coaches and pundits across the NBA stunned, with former MVP Kevin Durant saying the move could reshape the entire landscape of the league.

Speaking exclusively to Stats Perform in the wake of the Lakers' 128-112 road win over the New York Knicks on Saturday, Price echoed those sentiments.

"It still doesn't feel completely real. The news broke just an hour after the Lakers picked up their biggest win of the season," Price said.

"Now it feels like it doesn't matter at all because the Lakers pulled off one of the most stunning trades not just in recent NBA history, but all of NBA history.

"It's a trade that has not just turned my head, but the entire NBA community, from lead executives, presidents of operations, general managers, all the way down to coaching staff.

"Everybody is just stunned by this trade. It was one of the rare times where you can stun 99% of the league with a blockbuster deal."

Asked what Doncic would bring to Los Angeles, Price said the 25-year-old boasted the closest skillset in the league to that of all-time leading points scorer James.

"Forget young players, he's one of the brightest players in the league. He's one of those players who can be full offensive systems themselves," Price said.

"You've had that conversation about LeBron James for 20 years. And if you ask who's the closest player to LeBron James offensively? It's the guy they just acquired.

"A guy that's averaged, I think, 28.77 points for his career. A guy that's made five All-NBA teams. The only year he didn't make it was when he won Rookie of the Year!

"He is a special, out-of-this-world offensive talent, a special scorer, special passer, special playmaker, he reads the game at a high level. He's the type of player that a team will build around for as long as they can.

"That's the direction it looked like the Mavericks were going to go in until they decided to trade for Anthony Davis, a very special player in his own right.

"But your original question was what is Luka? He is everything, offensively. He is a magnificent player. He led the Mavericks to the Western Conference Finals just a few years ago. He's been a very, very special player in a short amount of time in the league."

Doncic joins a Lakers team sat fifth in the Western Conference standings with a 28-19 record but not widely tipped for Championship contention this year.

While some have questioned whether there might be teething problems when he links up with James, Price believes the duo will soon figure things out.

"When you do have LeBron and Luka, I mean, they're offensively minded geniuses, basketball geniuses," Price said.

"This is one of those things where they've both played a certain way, pretty much their entire careers, LeBron for a much longer period of time, but you figure it out."
