Gauff downs Bencic to reach Madrid Open quarters
Belinda Bencic was no match for Coco Gauff as the youngster powered into the quarter-finals of the Madrid Open for the first time.
Coco Gauff dispatched Belinda Bencic in under 90 minutes to take her place in the Madrid Open quarter-finals.
Monday's meeting was the third encounter between Gauff and Bencic this season.
Gauff defeated the Tokyo 2020 Olympic gold medallist at the Australian Open but was then defeated by Bencic at the Indian Wells Open last month.
However, the fourth seed had no such trouble on this occasion, cruising to a 6-4 6-2 victory while dropping just one game on serve in the process.
That concession of serve came midway through the opening set, but Gauff hit back with a break of her own to take the lead.
An early break to go 3-1 up in the second ensured a procession from then on for the American, albeit Bencic did claw back three match points before finally sending a backhand long.

Next up for Gauff, who will play in the Madrid Open quarter-finals for the first time, is a tussle with teenage sensation Mirra Andreeva, who downed Yuliia Starodubtseva 6-1 6-4.
Data Debrief: Bouncing back from a bagel
Gauff's Madrid campaign did not start well, as she lost the first set of her opening match against Dayana Yastremska 6-0.
Yet she has recovered in style and has not dropped a set since. Indeed, since the Madrid Open became a WTA 1000 event in 2009, Gauff is just the second woman to reach the quarter-finals after being on the wrong end of a bagel in the first set of her opening tie, after Bethanie Mattek Sands (2011).
Gauff has now reached at least the quarter-finals at nine of the 10 WTA 1000 tournaments, with her home event in Miami the only one in which she is yet to reach the last eight.
