'This reflects our ideas' - Flick lauds Barca display in Girona rout

Barcelona moved three points clear at the LaLiga summit with a convincing win over Girona, a display that left Hansi Flick very impressed.

Hansi Flick expressed his delight at seeing his ideas and attacking philosophy slowly taking shape after Barcelona's 4-1 thrashing of Girona on Sunday.

Ladislav Krejci's own-goal gave Barcelona a first-half lead, but Arnaut Danjuma levelled the scores eight minutes after the restart to put the contest finely in the balance.

But the LaLiga leaders used their plethora of attacking options to assume control of the match, with Robert Lewandowski netting a brace to put the result beyond doubt.

Ferran Torres continued his recent run with the game's final goal, with this result the 20th match across all competitions that Barcelona have scored four or more times.

In all competitions, Flick's side have also scored 139 goals in 45 matches this season. No team from LaLiga has ever scored more in 45 games of any campaign.

"This reflects our idea, we want to attack. We want to create chances - not just chances to score, but to create chances constantly," Flick told reporters.

"That's what I love about this team, it's what we always want. They always want to score goals.

"When you watch our counter-attack, I didn't just see the striker or the attacking midfielder, but even (central midfielder) Frenkie de Jong was running really fast."

But Girona's defence held firm for much of the first half, with visiting goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga making several saves to keep the margin to just one at the break.

"I think the first half was very good. Maybe we missed (the opportunity to score) one or two more goals, but we have to admit that Girona defended very well," Flick said.

"They know how to keep the ball, they are excellent in possession."

Lewandowski proved to be Barcelona's hero again this season, taking his tally across all competitions to 38 goals, and is out in front in the LaLiga scoring charts.

Kylian Mbappe had closed in on the Pole with his brace against Leganes, putting him on 22 league goals, but Lewandowski was able to restore his three-goal cushion.

"I know Lewandowski wants to win the Pichichi (award for the top scorer)," Flick said.

"But the important thing is that the team wins. At the beginning of the season, I gave him my full confidence.

"Lewandowski has been scoring crucial goals this season. I don't like to talk about individual players, but he's a special player.

"I'm also very happy for Ferran (Torres), it was a very important goal."

With nine games left, Barcelona are three points clear of Real Madrid in the table, though the Clasico rivals have a league fixture taking place in the coming weeks.

Many believe that the game in May will decide where the LaLiga trophy will end up this season, but Flick only concentrated on taking the games one by one.

"There's still a long way to go before El Clasico. We'll have to show our strength, and it won't be easy," Flick said.

"This league season can throw up some nice surprises and that's good for the competition."
