Possession key to PSG's Champions League progression, says Luis Enrique

Paris Saint-Germain travel to Anfield to play Liverpool in the Champions League, hoping to overturn their 1-0 deficit from the first leg.

Luis Enrique said Paris Saint-Germain's ability to control possession will be key in their Champions League last 16 second leg against Liverpool at Anfield on Tuesday.

PSG find themselves 1-0 down heading into the clash. Despite dominating the first leg, Harvey Elliott popped up with the winning goal in the 87th minute.

The Parisiens had 27 shots against Arne Slot's side last week, the second-most on record (from 2003-04) by a team in a Champions League knockout match in which they both failed to score and lost, behind only PSG themselves against Borussia Dortmund in May 2024 (30).

But all hope is not lost. They have managed to progress from two of their previous five Champions League knockout stage ties after losing the first leg, coming back to beat Borussia Dortmund on aggregate in the 2019-20 last 16 (3-2) and Barcelona in the 2023-24 quarter-finals (6-4).

"Tuesday's match will be more balanced. I'm optimistic about what my team can do," Luis Enrique told reporters.

"Of course, we'll have to defend together and attack together, have possession as much as possible, and then we'll be able to create chances.

"Our objective is clear, it's to try and be better than our opponents. Especially away from home. It's hard to play away from home, but you try to control things.

"We know what we do well and what we need to improve. We're aiming to keep hold of the ball, that's our base, and from there we'll see how the game develops."

PSG are given just a 25% chance of reaching the quarter-finals of the competition according to Opta's data-led simulations.

But Luis Enrique is no stranger to defying the odds in the Champions League, helping Barcelona to one of the greatest European comebacks of all time against his current employers.

Barcelona made history by becoming the first team in the Champions League to overturn a first-leg 4-0 deficit in the round of 16, despite being 5-3 down on aggregate in the 88th minute.

Asked if he could recreate it, he said: "I would have preferred not to have had to come back from four goals down against PSG with Barca.

"But in my career, even when things go wrong, there are still elements that you can manage. I find that interesting and I have the ability to do it."

Liverpool have won all four of their home games in the Champions League this season. Should they claim another victory here, Slot would become the first manager to win each of his first five home matches in charge of an English side in the competition.

Indeed, none of the last 15 French sides to play away from home against an English opponent in Europe have managed to win, with 14 of those ending in defeats.

Luis Enrique, however, dispelled any notion that his team would be daunted by the atmosphere at Anfield.

"No player in the team will not want to play here. It's a legendary stadium in the history of football in Europe," he said.

"It's a huge motivation for the players and as a team. We want to show that we're capable of playing a good game in Liverpool's stadium."

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia echoed his manager's sentiments, but said PSG needed to be more clinical if they are to advance to the next round.

"The most important thing on the pitch is to stay focused on our work and do our best. It doesn't matter if it's Paris or Anfield, we have to do our best," he added.

"In the last game, we had a lot of chances, but we didn't score. This Tuesday, we have to be ready for anything. As soon as we get the chance to score, we have to score."
