'We've done our job' - Alonso delighted Leverkusen put pressure on Bundesliga leaders

Bayer Leverkusen are given a slim chance of retaining the Bundesliga title, but Xabi Alonso is determined to push Bayern Munich all the way.

Xabi Alonso says Bayer Leverkusen have "done our job" after their 3-1 win over Bochum on Friday put pressure on Bayern Munich at the top of the Bundesliga.

The reigning champions closed the gap at the top to three points, with Bayern facing St. Pauli on Saturday.

Felix Passlack had pegged Leverkusen back in the first half after Aleix Garcia's opener, but second-half goals from Victor Boniface and substitute Amine Adli got them over the line for a second consecutive win.

They could have had more, with Jeremie Frimpong missing a good chance before Granit Xhaka hit both posts with a late strike.

Bayern are still overwhelming favourites to win the Bundesliga, with the Opta supercomputer giving them a 93% chance of lifting the trophy, with Leverkusen's chances rated at 7%.

"Great win for us on Friday, and we're waiting for the results at the weekend, but we've done our job," Alonso said in his press conference.

"From [Saturday], we'll be thinking about the DFB-Pokal. It's a great opportunity that we have, and we'll see, but now we're happy.

"It may not have been a super-spectacular performance, but we remained patient, stayed calm and if we do that, we will get a chance for the next seven games. We will try to win them and see what happens."

There was little to split the sides in the first half, but Leverkusen found their foothold in the second, having nine attempts worth 1.78 expected goals (xG).

In the opening period, they managed just five touches in the opposition box, with that number rising to 13 after the break as they secured a fifth consecutive home win over Bochum.

"It was tough. Bochum fought well and were well-organised," Alonso added.

"There wasn't too much space between the lines, and we got the one-on-one situations. We spoke at half-time about being patient, trust what we're doing, that if we do things well, we'll have a chance.

"The counter-attack [goal] they got was a great save from Lukas [Hradecky], but after that, the reaction was good."

Leverkusen’s next game with see them face Arminia Bielefeld in the semi-final of the DFB-Pokal on Tuesday.
