Swiatek survives Schnaider scare to reach Madrid Open quarters
Iga Swiatek was made to work for her place in the Madrid Open quarter-finals, battling past 19th seed Diana Schnaider on Tuesday.
Iga Swiatek passed a stern test in her Madrid Open title defence to down Diana Schnaider across three thrilling sets on Tuesday.
After play was suspended in the Spanish capital on Monday due to a nationwide power outage, Swiatek battled to a 6-0 6-7 (3-7) 6-4 victory in two hours and 34 minutes.
The Pole threatened to breeze into the final eight at a canter after taking the first set in just 22 minutes, but Schnaider responded emphatically in the second.
After breaking Swiatek early, Schnaider let her advantage slip as her opponent led 5-4, but she was able to recover before edging the tie-break to take the match the distance.
Swiatek, however, was able to regain her composure and crucially break Schnaider in the fifth game of the third set, sealing the win with a forehand victory after a brilliant rally.
The world number two has yet to lose before the quarter-finals in seven tournaments this season, but has failed to reach the final four since the French Open last year.
Swiatek's reward is a clash against Australian Open champion Madison Keys or Donna Vekic.

Data Debrief: Swiatek continues Madrid romance
Swiatek has become the first player to reach 17 consecutive quarter-finals from WTA main draws entered on clay since Martina Hingis (19, Hilton Head 1997-Hamburg 2002).
Since 1990, Swiatek (72.2%, 83-32) trails only Steffi Graf (82.1%) and Serena Williams (75.3%) for winning percentage against WTA top 20 opponents – minimum 10 matches.
Including the Billie Jean King and FedEx Cup, she also remains undefeated at WTA level in matches where she has claimed a 6-0 set, moving to a career win-loss record of 78-0.
