Khawaja's historic double century puts Australia in control in Galle

Usman Khawaja became the oldest player in Test cricket history to score a double century as Australia took control against Sri Lanka.

Usman Khawaja celebrated his maiden Test double century before Josh Inglis smashed a rapid ton on debut as Australia took full control of their first Test against Sri Lanka.

Australia reached a formidable first-innings score of 654-6 before declaring, then ripped through the hosts' top order, leaving them 44-3 at stumps on Thursday.

Steve Smith, who notched his 10,000th Test run on Wednesday, was the only wicket to fall in the morning session as he left the crease having added 37 runs to his overnight total.

Khawaja celebrated his first Test double century just before lunch, but fell early on in the second session to Prabath Jayasuriya (3-193), ending his brilliant innings on 232.

But Australia continued to dominate, with Inglis reaching his maiden Test ton in just 90 deliveries, but he was dismissed shortly afterwards from another Jayasuriya delivery.

Steady knocks from Alex Carey (46 not out), Beau Webster (23) and Mitchell Starc (19 not out) steered Australia to a huge total before Smith decided to declare.

Sri Lanka simply capitulated early in their run chase, losing Oshada Fernando (seven), Dimuth Karunaratne (seven) and Angelo Mathews (seven) inside 10 overs.

Dinesh Chandimal and Kamindu Mendis will be tasked with leading Sri Lanka's fightback on day three, but the damage may have already been done.

Data Debrief: Records tumble in Galle

Australia turned on the style in Galle to put themselves on course for a 1-0 series lead, with several notable figures reached.

In fact, their 654-6 declared is their fifth-highest Test total this century, only scoring more against India in 2012 (659-4), England in 2017 (662-9), England again in 2009 (674-6) and Zimbabwe in 2003 (735-6).

There was also a special moment for 38-year-old Khawaja, who became the oldest player to hit a double Test century, surpassing India great Sachin Tendulkar's 15-year record in the process (203 at 37 years old).

But Inglis also impressed, becoming the 21st Australian - and the first since Adam Voges in June 2015 - to score a century on their Test debut.
