Novak Djokovic lost in straight sets in his second-round Monte-Carlo Masters match against Alejandro Tabilo on Wednesday.

The 24-time grand slam champion was beaten 6-3 6-4 on his first outing of the clay-court season by the Chilean, who also eliminated him from last year's Italian Open in Rome.

Tabilo had Djokovic struggling badly on his forehand, with the Serbian making 29 unforced errors throughout the match.

Tabilo broke twice in the opening set to get his nose ahead and there was little to suggest a fightback from Djokovic was coming in the second.

Djokovic was broken early again, while he could not take advantage of two break point opportunities to get himself back into the set.

Throughout the match, Tabilo took three of his eight break point chances, while Djokovic could only manage one.

The 37-year-old was also unable to win more than one game in a row at any point, as Tabilo advanced to the last 16.

Data debrief: Down-and-out Djokovic well beaten

Before Wednesday, Djokovic had won 10 straight matches on clay, which was a run stretching back to last year's French Open - he withdrew ahead of the quarter-finals at Roland Garros.

But Tabilo ended that streak and is now one of just three players never to have lost to Djokovic, having played him more than once.

By improving his head-to-head versus Djokovic to 2-0, he joined Marat Safin and Jiri Vesely in that exclusive club.

Prior to this victory, Tabilo had won just two matches so far throughout the season, though that did include beating Stan Wawrinka in the previous round at Monte-Carlo.
