Scheffler breezing to CJ Cup glory after finishing third round in darkness

The CJ Cup field are struggling to keep the pace with Scottie Scheffler, who leads by eight shots heading into Sunday's final round.

Scottie Scheffler did not want to think about his final round just yet after cruising further into the lead at the CJ Cup, where he finished his penultimate day in darkness.

The world number one extended his advantage at the top of the leaderboard to eight shots on Saturday, furthering his chances of a wire-to-wire win in his hometown of Dallas.

A five-under 66 was capped by birdies on three of the final holes on a chaotic third day, finishing on the 18th more than 13 hours after play had started.

Half the field needed to complete the second round, including 18 players who had not started, which led to the late finish owing to a six-hour weather delay the day before on Friday.

The horn for darkness had already sounded as Scheffler wrapped up his third round on the par-five last, leaving him unable to see his approach shot into the final hole.

"I saw it take off the way I wanted it to," Scheffler said of his approach on 18. "But after that, I couldn’t see that far. Really, I’d say the most challenging part was reading a green."

Scheffler two-putted from distance for the largest 54-hole lead on the PGA Tour since Rory McIlroy led by eight on the way to winning the 2011 U.S. Open.

Erik van Rooyen, Adam Schenk, and Ricky Castillo are the trio at 15-under chasing the two-time major winner.

"I mean, I just walked off the golf course," Scheffler said in the darkness of a post-round interview. "Tomorrow is not really a concern of mine right now."

Scheffler acknowledged his game was not as sharp as the first two rounds, having missed five fairways on Saturday, just one fewer than across his opening two days combined.

"I definitely wasn’t as sharp as I was the last two days, but overall I posted a pretty good score," the American added.

"Over a 72-hole tournament, you’re going to have days, or typically at least one day, where your swing’s not firing on all cylinders like it was the first two days. It’s all about how you battle through that."

Scheffler appears set to become the first high-school golfer from Dallas to win the CJ Cup since Scott Verplank in 2007.

The 28-year-old would also become the third wire-to-wire winner in the history of the tournament after Mark Hayes (1976) and Tom Watson (1980), if he finishes the job in Sunday's final round.
