Rain frustrates Punjab Kings after big total against KKR
Punjab Kings’ openers Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh starred in the first innings before heavy rain saw the match called off.
The Indian Premier League clash between Kolkata Knight Riders and Punjab Kings was abandoned due to persistent rain on Saturday, meaning both teams took a point each.
Shreyas Iyer, returning to Eden Gardens for the first time since leaving KKR after having led them to the IPL 2024 title, won the toss and opted to bat on what was largely seen as a very slow wicket.
But the Kings’ openers did not make it seem so as they plundered KKR's seamers all over the park from the moment Priyansh Arya (69 off 35) got them off to a flier by nailing Vaibhav Arora (2-34) for two beautiful cover drives in the first over.
Prabhsimran Singh (83 off 49) got into the act as well in the powerplay, hitting Harshit Rana for a few sweetly timed boundaries.
KKR’s spinners – namely Varun Chakravarthy and Sunil Narine – managed to quieten things briefly, but the two young guns showed their class through the middle overs.
They raced away to a 100-run partnership in just 63 balls, before Arya was eventually caught on the boundary.
Prabhsimran kept the scoring rate high, racking up six maximums before he eventually fell in the 15th over.
Helped by a neat cameo from skipper Iyer (25 not out), Punjab reached a formidable total of 201-4, though it could have been even more if not for some cheap dismissals through the back-end, with Glenn Maxwell (7) and Marco Jansen (3) both falling in single figures.

KKR, however, never really got into their chase, with only one over of the second innings being bowled before rain halted proceedings.
Sunil Narine (4no) and Ramanullah Gurbaz (1no) remained unbeaten as the match was called off, with KKR on 7-0 in pursuit of 202.
KKR will likely be the happier of the two sides, having picked up a vital point to keep their slim play-off hopes alive, while Punjab will feel hard done by as they would have fancied their chances of defending a strong total.
Punjab move above Mumbai Indians to fourth place, the final play-off position, with 11 points, while KKR are four points behind in seventh position.
