McIlroy can win 10 majors following Masters triumph, says putting coach

Rory McIlroy's putting coach believes nothing can stop him from doubling his major tally, having finally ended his wait for Masters glory.

Rory McIlroy can go on to win 10 majors following his dramatic Masters triumph, according to putting coach Brad Faxon.

The Northern Irishman ended his long wait to don the Green Jacket at Augusta National, doing so at the 17th attempt as he edged out Justin Rose in a play-off on Sunday.

McIlroy had missed a putt to win on the 18th hole, but showed great resilience to recover and eventually get over the line for his first major win since the 2014 PGA Championship - and fifth overall.

The 35-year-old became only the sixth player to win a career Grand Slam, after Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods, and the first European golfer to achieve the feat.

Among the current active golfers, only Woods (15) and Phil Mickelson (six) boast more major wins than McIlroy, while only Nick Faldo (six) has recorded more among European players in the past century.

The world number two had waited almost 11 years to add to his major collection, recording 21 top-10 finishes in his last 38 such events without success.

However, now he has the Masters under his belt, putting coach Faxon believes there is nothing stopping him from winning many more.

"He has played professional golf for more than half his life now, and there is nothing that can stop this guy," Faxon said.

"Rory can double his number of majors. He can go on to win 10. Something happened from the defeats to build the resilience he has. It builds inside what you need to overcome. He is an example to everyone.

"Rory has carried a burden since 2014 to have this goal accomplished and, every year since, the first major of the year - it gets harder.

"Rory is one of the most intelligent, kind people I have ever met in my life, and he knows everything about the history of the game and what this means for the game."
