Marseille 1-1 Strasbourg: De Zerbi's side lose ground in title race

Marseille are now nine points behind Ligue 1 leaders Paris Saint-Germain after wasting several chances in their 1-1 draw with Strasbourg.

Marseille lost more ground in the Ligue 1 title race after being held to a 1-1 draw by Strasbourg at the Stade Velodrome on Sunday.

Roberto De Zerbi's side are now nine points behind Paris Saint-Germain after the leaders emerged 2-1 victors against Lens 24 hours earlier.

Strasbourg were ahead in the 23rd minute after Emanuel Emegha was played in by Andrey Santos, with the Dutchman staying composed and lofting the ball over Geronimo Rulli.

Marseille continued to be frustrated by their opponents, failing to register a shot on target for the entirety of the first half, but came out firing after the interval.

Luis Henrique rattled the woodwork just after the hour before substitute Jonathan Rowe fired the first attempt at Djordje Petrovic's goal just two minutes after being introduced.

Marseille drew level in the 68th minute after Santos fouled Robinio Vaz in the box, with Greenwood stepping up to score the spot-kick for his 12th league goal of the season.

The hosts continued to push for the winner, though it was Strasbourg who came closest to snatching all three points as goalscorer Emegha hit the woodwork late on.

Data Debrief: Wasteful Marseille pay the price

Marseille will feel this is an opportunity missed to keep within touching distance of leaders PSG, and they will be left to rue several missed chances on Sunday.

De Zerbi's side ended the contest with an expected goals (xG) total of 2.91 from their 18 attempts, though only three of those were on target against Strasbourg.

They also squandered five big chances at the Stade Velodrome, their highest tally in a Ligue 1 game since 17 September 2020 against St Etienne (six).

But their equaliser came through Greenwood, who has now been involved in 15 goals in the top-flight this season with Marseille (12 goals, three assists), his highest tally in a league campaign. He also had 12 touches in the opponent's box tonight, as many as the entire Strasbourg team.
