Punjab Kings make IPL history in epic win over KKR
Punjab Kings successfully defended the lowest winning total in Indian Premier League history as they beat Kolkata Knight Riders.
Indian Premier League history was made on Tuesday as Punjab Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders served up another thriller.
Punjab came out on top by 16 runs as they successfully defended a target of just 111, the lowest winning total in the history of the competition.
Just under a year on from setting the highest ever successful run chase in the IPL when they beat KKR by eight wickets at Eden Gardens, the Kings instead showed incredible grit with the ball to claim an epic victory.
Harshit Rana (3-25) surged through the Kings' top order as Punjab finished the powerplay on 54-4, with their collapse coming after a decent start from openers Priyansh Arya (22) and Prabhsimran Singh (30).
Shashank Singh's 18 was Punjab's next-highest score, though, as Sunil Narine (2-14) and Varun Chakravarthy (2-21) picked them apart, with Xavier Bartlett's run-out summing up a dismal innings that came to an end inside 16 overs.
KKR needed to get the job done in 14.1 overs or fewer to go top of the standings, yet instead found themselves on the wrong end of a historic defeat.
Marco Jansen (3-17) dismissed Narine at the end of the first over, and fellow opener Quinton de Kock was then caught on the boundary by Suryansh Shedge from Bartlett's bowling just two balls later.
Suryansh was almost in the right place from the very next delivery, but Angkrish Raghuvanshi's slice just evaded his clutches.
Raghuvanshi hit his stride, sending Bartlett for 10 runs as KKR steadied the ship at the end of the powerplay. Yet Yuzvendra Chahal (4-28) then came to the fore.
He pinned Ajinkya Rahane (17) lbw, but from the next ball, Bartlett somehow managed to skew his attempted throw back in from the boundary out for four.
Chahal, though, was not put off his stride. He sent Raghuvanshi packing on 37, and was on a hat-trick when he dismissed Rinku Singh and Ramandeep Singh in his next over, after Glenn Maxwell had done for Venkatesh Iyer.
Jansen came back into the attack to end Rana's short stay at the crease, but Andre Russell (17) smashed Chahal for 16 in the space of four deliveries to put KKR back on the front foot.
It was not enough, though. Arshdeep Singh drew an edge from Vaibhav Arora, paving the way for Russell to drag on from Jensen's wicked match-winning delivery as KKR were skittled out for 95.

Data Debrief: Kings go into the record books
Already the owners of the highest successful run chase, it is only fitting that the Kings now hold the record for the lowest successfully defended target in the IPL.
The meeting between these sides in April last year saw the highest match aggregate set in this rivalry (523).
Tuesday's encounter provided the lowest match aggregate between KKR and the Kings (206).
The previous record for the lowest total defended was 116, set by Chennai Super Kings against Punjab in 2009.
