Leverkusen eager to keep Bayern 'on their toes' in Bundesliga title race
Bayer Leverkusen sit six points behind Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga, with just eight matches remaining in the 2024-25 season.
Xabi Alonso insists Bayer Leverkusen can still keep Bayern Munich "on their toes" in the Bundesliga after their dramatic 4-3 victory over Stuttgart on Sunday.
Leverkusen had lost their last three matches in all competitions and trailed 3-2 in the 88th minute before Angelo Stiller's own goal restored parity.
Patrik Schick then scored a 94th-minute winner, which saw Leverkusen close the gap at the top of the Bundesliga to six points after Bayern were held to a 1-1 draw by Union Berlin on Saturday.
Xabi Alonso's side have won 12 points from losing positions in the Bundesliga this season, more than any other team.
The victory also ensured Leverkusen's impressive away run continued – they are now unbeaten in each of their last 30 Bundesliga away games (W22 D8).
Leverkusen are still given just a 4.7% chance of retaining their Bundesliga crown by the Opta supercomputer, with Bayern the overwhelming favourites at 95.3%.
It was a needed result after their Champions League exit – at the hands of Bayern – and Alonso believes his side have shown that they can push the title race to the wire.
"We want to put as much pressure on them [Bayern] as possible," Alonso said.
"We know that there are eight more games in the Bundesliga. Our goal is to give everything in every Bundesliga game. On top of that, we have the DFB-Pokal semi-final.
"A lot can happen. It isn't in our hands, but our job is to win game after game. We will do our thing and see what Bayern Munich will do.
"We just want to keep them on their toes until the end."
Leverkusen had failed to find the back of the net during their three-match losing run, suffering a 2-0 defeat to Werder Bremen in their last Bundesliga outing, while they were knocked out of the Champions League due to a 5-0 aggregate defeat by Vincent Kompany's side.
They had 38 shots without success in that period, but Alonso got the reaction that he needed at MHPArena before the international break.
"We were able to show that we can come back from a deficit," he added.
"After the 3-2, we started believing we could get back into the game. Then, after the third goal, we wanted to fight for the win. It was important for everyone, especially the players, after three defeats in a row.
"To have that great feeling again after those ten days – that was important for all of us."
