Inter's comeback win sees treble talk gather pace

Inter remain on track to win the treble this season and boosted their hopes of winning the Serie A title by beating Monza on Saturday.

Inter's players know there is still work to do, but talk of a treble has begun after the Nerazzurri extended their lead at the top of Serie A with a comeback win on Saturday.

Inter now hold a four-point lead at the top of the Serie A table, though Napoli could reduce that back to one point with a win over Fiorentina on Sunday.

After a 2-0 win away to Feyenoord in the Champions League last-16 first leg in midweek, Inter have one foot in the quarter-finals and they have a Coppa Italia semi-final against AC Milan to look forward to in April.

Bottom of the table Monza looked like pulling off a shock when they took a 2-0 lead in the first half, but Marko Arnautovic and Hakan Calhanoglu levelled the scoreline before a Georgios Kyriakopoulos own goal gave Inter the win.

"We can't underestimate teams, the opponents are good. In the end, we dominated, we tried everything and we are happy with the victory," Calhanoglu, who scored his 50th Serie A goal on Saturday, told Sky.

"The coach's [Simone Inzaghi] mentality is right, we'll try to win the treble. It's a very long season, let's take it step by step."

Arnautovic has already experienced winning the treble with Inter, in 2010, but back then, the on-loan striker saw even less of the action, making three brief substitute appearances across all competitions.

He has scored in two consecutive appearances at home (having also scored against Fiorentina) for the first time since a run of three between August and September 2022 for Bologna.

"I was a fan when Inter won the first treble. I was with them, it's a pride for me but I don't feel it is mine because maybe I played two or three games," Arnautovic said.

"Now I'm here, we try to win everything, knowing that it's not easy.

"This victory weighs heavily because in the first 25 minutes, we were 2-0 down, then we did our job, as did our fans. We are very happy but it is not over because the championship is still very long."

Yann Bisseck also believes the club can win another treble.

"100% possible, we are still in all competitions," Bisseck said.

"Let's go step by step, concentrated, then let's see what happens."

Simone Inzaghi is also confident in Inter's chances of winning silverware this season, having corrected a reporter prior to their Champions League tie, by saying they were still on track for the treble.

Following the win over Monza, Inzaghi reiterated Inter's hopes of getting their hands on all trophies but pointed out a fourth is also available to them this term.

"I should've corrected myself again and said quadruple because we're in the running for the Club World Cup too at the end of the season," smiled Inzaghi.

"The only idea in our minds is to make our fans happy by trying to honour every single game. It is not easy, but these lads have great spirit, we want to take it one game at a time and in a couple of days we'll be back on the pitch against Feyenoord."
