Gauff and Australian Open champion Keys progress in Madrid
American duo Coco Gauff and Madison Keys progressed to the round of 16 at the Madrid Open, where they will be joined by Mirra Andreeva.
Coco Gauff made light work of Ann Li as she booked her place in the last 16 at the Madrid Open.
Gauff did not look set to have it all her own way on Saturday, as she found herself a break down at the start of the opening set.
Yet she responded in style, reeling off eight straight games to pave the way for an ultimately dominant 6-2 6-3 victory.
The 21-year-old will join Australian Open champion and fellow American Madison Keys in the next round, after her 7-5 7-6 (7-3) defeat of Anna Kalinskaya.
Keys had to save three set points in the second, but won six of the last seven of the tie-break to get the job done.
She also salvaged nine of the 12 break points she faced.
100 - Since the format’s introduction in 2009, Madison Keys (100) has become the third American to achieve 100+ match wins at WTA-1000 events, after Serena Williams (148) and Venus Williams (112). Century.#MMOPEN | @MutuaMadridOpen @WTA @WTA_insider pic.twitter.com/zStvJ0d8Ye

There was also a straight-sets victory for seventh seed Mirra Andreeva, who ensured her place in the last 16 of the Madrid Open for a third straight season.
The teenager beat Magdalena Frech 7-5 6-3.
Data Debrief: America's best and brightest
Keys' win was her 100th at WTA 1000 events, making her the third American to achieve the feat.
The other two players on that list are the Williams sisters. Serena won 148 at the level, while Venus triumphed 112 times.
Keys has also collected 11 wins against seeded opponents in 2025, which trails only Aryna Sabalenka (12).
Gauff, meanwhile, became the fifth player aged 21 or under to reach at least 25 rounds of 16 at WTA 1000 tournaments, joining Martina Hingis, Maria Sharapova, Caroline Wozniacki and Svetlana Kuznetsova.
