Sharma powers Mumbai Indians to confident win over CSK
Rohit Sharma top scored for Mumbai Indians as they picked up their third consecutive win against Chennai Super Kings on Sunday.
Mumbai Indians defeated their fiercest rivals Chennai Super Kings by nine wickets on Sunday, courtesy of a Rohit Sharma special.
Rohit led Mumbai to their third straight win, making light work of the chase with a blistering knock of 75 not out. He was supported ably by Suryakumar Yadav, who contributed with a quickfire fifty of his own, ending 68 not out off just 30 deliveries.
Sent in to bat by Hardik Pandya, CSK lost Rachin Ravindra (five) early, but 17-year-old debutant Ayush Mhatre (32) and Shaik Rasheed (19) steadied things briefly.
Their chase stalled after the powerplay when both Rasheed and Mhatre were dismissed with CSK going 27 balls in the middle overs without attempting to hit a boundary.
Ravindra Jadeja (53 not out) and Shivam Dube (50) then stitched together an important partnership of 79 runs off just 50 balls to provide a solid foundation for some late-overs power hitting.
But Jasprit Bumrah (2-25) was at his lethal best, dismissing Dube and MS Dhoni (four) in the death overs to restrict CSK to 176-5.
The second innings was when the game truly came to life. Rohit, who has struggled for form and consistency in the IPL for many seasons now, showed off some of his old vintage with a brilliant knock.
He took down Khaleel Ahmed for 14 runs in the third over, including two well-timed cover drives and a trademark pickup shot past deep square leg. Ryan Rickelton (24) was dismissed just after the powerplay, but Mumbai had plenty of firepower to make light work of the chase in the end.
Suryakumar played some excellent shots square of the wicket to negate CSK's spin threat, while Rohit continued to pepper the boundary with authority.
Their partnership of 114 off just 54 balls is Mumbai's highest this season. They closed out the match in style, hammering 65 runs in the final four overs – 15, 14, 16, and 20 runs respectively – to seal a statement win.
The result lifts Mumbai to sixth in the table after a sluggish start, while CSK slump to 10th with their sixth defeat of the campaign.
