Spoelstra hoping Heat will learn from 'humbling' series sweep to Cavs

The Miami Heat's NBA season came to a grinding halt on Monday, with the Cleveland Cavaliers sending records tumbling in their series win.

Eric Spoelstra said the Miami Heat's final two games of their series clean sweep against the Cleveland Cavaliers were "embarrassing", but he hopes the team will learn from it.

Spoelstra watched on as Donovan Mitchell's 22 points led the Cavaliers to a 138-83 Game 4 victory on Monday to seal the most dominant series win to date in the playoffs.

Indeed, Cleveland won all four meetings by a combined total of 122 points, the largest margin by any team in a playoff series.

The previous record was 121 points, set by the Denver Nuggets in a 2009 opening-round series victory over the New Orleans Hornets that went five games.

Cleveland led by as many as 60 points before settling for a 55-point win, the largest series-clinching victory in NBA playoff history.

To add further insult to injury, the combined 92 points that the Cavs won by in Games 3 and 4 is the largest point differential in a two-game span in playoff history.

It was also just the third time that Miami had lost all of their games in a playoff series in the franchise's history.

"It was a fun experience. I became better from it. But damn, it was humbling, this series. These last two games were embarrassing," Spoelstra said.

"We were irrational as we usually are, thinking we could win this series. We showed we weren't ready for that.

"This is embarrassing, but there are going to be a lot of teams out there like us that have big aspirations," Spoelstra added.

"As an organisation, we will look at this and say this is unacceptable. What I loved about this group is how badly they wanted to get into this dance. And that's something."

To make matters worse, Tyler Herro managed to score just four points on a 1-of-10 shooting display that included eight misses in nine attempts from 3-point range.

"Really no excuses for it," Herro said. "It's embarrassing."

The Heat, who were the first team in league history to advance to a conference quarter-final as a No. 10 seed via the play-in tournament, were led by Nikola Jovic's 24 points.
