RCB victorious over Rajasthan in Royal IPL clash

Phil Salt and Virat Kohli, along with the bowlers, shone as the Royal Challengers Bengaluru picked up their fourth away win of the season.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru cruised to a dominant nine-wicket victory over Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League on Sunday.

After a bruising loss to Delhi Capitals at home, RCB stretched their unbeaten away record to four straight wins with an impressive victory in Jaipur.

RCB captain Rajat Patidar won the toss and opted to bowl first as Jaipur hosted its first IPL game of the season. Put in to bat on a slow wicket, all of Rajasthan's batters apart from Yashasvi Jaiswal (75 off 47) found it tough, with many getting starts but failing to build on their innings.

After struggling to connect throughout the powerplay, Sanju Samson was dismissed by Krunal Pandya in the seventh over, and while Jaiswal and Riyan Parag (30) attempted a rebuild, RCB's bowlers were too clinical, offering little room to hit through the line.

It was a combined team effort from RCB's bowlers, with Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Yash Dayal, Josh Hazlewood and Krunal Pandya picking up one wicket each at modest economy rates.

Dhruv Jurel (35) provided some late fireworks to take Rajasthan to a respectable total of 173-4, but they were unable to produce the heroic bowling effort needed to contain RCB's explosive batters.

Phil Salt (65) raced out of the blocks, peppering Rajasthan's bowlers all over the ground, including taking Jofra Archer for 10 and 12 runs off his first two overs, respectively.

Salt's onslaught continued as he smashed five fours and six sixes to end with 65 runs from just 33 deliveries, before Kumar Kartikeya (1-25) ended his stand in the ninth over.

Virat Kohli (62 not out) provided able support from the other end, while Devdutt Padikkal (40) joined him to seal an extremely comfortable win for RCB, helped by some RR dropped catches.

The win sees RCB leapfrog the mid-table logjam and move to third, while RR sink further to seventh with just two wins from their six games.

Data debrief: Padikkal joins Kohli in the 1,000-run club

After his 40 not out, Padikkal is now just the third Indian batter to cross 1,000 runs for RCB, after Kohli – who scored his 66th IPL half-century, taking him level with Australian batter David Warner for the joint-most IPL fifties.

RCB have prolifically been known to have housed some of the world's best overseas batting talent, including the likes of AB de Villiers, Chris Gayle, Faf du Plessis, and Glenn Maxwell – all of whom have crossed 1,000 runs for the franchise, but have lacked consistent Indian batting to support them.

Bar Kohli, Padikkal is just the second Indian batter after former India coach and current RR coach Rahul Dravid to achieve the feat, with Dravid's RCB career ending at 1,132 runs.

Kohli is far and away RCB's top run-scorer, having amassed 8252 runs across his 18 seasons with the franchise, while captain Paditar is just 15 runs shy of the 1000-run mark.
