Oxford United 0-1 Leeds United: Solomon sends visitors top

Manor Solomon’s first-half goal secured an uncomfortable win over Oxford United, taking Leeds United one step closer to the Premier League.

Leeds United moved top of the Championship table and edged one step closer to the Premier League with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Oxford United at the Kassam Stadium on Friday.

Tottenham loanee Manor Solomon was the hero for the visitors, as his first-half goal provided the only breakthrough of the match.

It was far from a vintage performance from Daniel Farke's side, with some profligacy in front of goal costing them in what could have been a more comfortable outing.

After a tempered start, Leeds grew into the game with a flurry of half-chances before Solomon gave them the lead just past the half-hour mark.

Joe Rondon played a wonderful diagonal pass out to Jayden Bogle, who met the pass with an incisive run before picking out Solomon at the far post, the forward thumping his shot past Jamie Cumming.

Oxford gave the visitors a tough test from there, and made them work hard to hold onto the lead, though their struggles in attack persisted, with very few clear-cut chances falling their way.

Bogle and Solomon's connection proved to be the only real moment of quality in an otherwise uneventful match. Leeds searched for a second goal to calm the nerves as the second half went on, but could not quite break through Oxford's defence for an insurance goal.

Farke will not mind that too much though, as the win takes his side to the top of the table on 91 points, level with Burnley and five points clear of third-placed Sheffield United.

The Blades ensured Leeds could not gain promotion on Friday after a 2-0 victory over Cardiff City earlier on Friday saw them move to 86 points.

Gustavo Hamer opened the scoring with a low volley in the 33rd minute, while Ben Brereton Diaz made sure of the victory with three minutes remaining after clinically finishing while one-on-one with the goalkeeper.

Oxford, meanwhile, are resigned to 19th place, three points above 20th-placed Hull City, with their work cut out for them if they are to stay in the Championship.

Data debrief: Leeds extend incredible winning streak with goals galore

Leeds United have now gone 79 Championship matches in a row without losing after having scored the first goal of the game.

The last time they opened the scoring but did not manage to secure the win came against Wigan Athletic in 2019, coincidentally also on Good Friday.

Indeed, Leeds have been on a scoring hot-streak, finding the net in 36 of their 43 games so far. No team has done so more often in the Championship this season.

They dominated Oxford United on the expected goals (xG) front as well, registering 1.67 xG to Oxford's modest 0.46 xG.
