Miedema relishes the big games after Champions League double downs Chelsea

Vivianne Miedema came off the bench to score twice as Manchester City beat Chelsea 2-0 in the Women's Champions League on Wednesday.

Vivianne Miedema relishes coming up big in the key moments after her double saw Manchester City snap Chelsea's unbeaten run.

Chelsea went into Wednesday's Women's Champions League clash on an unbeaten streak of 31 games in all competitions.

Had they avoided defeat against City, who they beat in last weekend's League Cup final and also face in the Women's Super League on Sunday, Sonia Bompastor's team would have set an unbeaten record for a WSL team.

City, though, had other ideas, with Miedema climbing off the bench to score twice in the second half and secure a 2-0 first-leg win at Joie Stadium, leaving Chelsea in need of a turnaround next week if they are to reach the semi-finals.

"It's such a tough game," Miedema told BBC Sport.

"We lost on Saturday and we used that as extra motivation. Champions League nights at the Joie have been pretty special so far so I'm really happy.

"You always want to start but I am not in a position where I can play four lots of 90 minutes in a row. We need to be smart and I’m happy today it worked out the way I wanted it to work out.

"I love playing the big games. It's a special competition. Having the fans here as well, it was a special night. Hopefully we can take this one a bit further."

Chelsea's remarkable unbeaten streak stretched back to the May of last year. The Blues had won 29 of their past 31 games ahead of Wednesday's clash, drawing twice.

"We respect them so much," Miedema said of Chelsea.

"They have been unreal again this season. We still have to play each other two times. It’s going to be really difficult but I think we can get a lot of confidence from this game."

City lost key forwards Khadija Shaw and Aoba Fujino to injury, and both are doubtful for Sunday's league clash with the Blues.

Speaking to DAZN, interim City boss Nick Cushing said: "We know it's going to be tough against Chelsea, so you're going to have to suffer at times and we're going to have to take chances.

"I thought we had moments in the second half where we could have been better, but we defended the game much better tonight.

"Coming out of the cup final there was initial disappointment but a lot of positives in the game. Then you find out you lose two key players and it's just about opportunity. I believe in the group, I wouldn't be here if I did not. I think there are some small things that could make us a lot more and we showed that tonight."

Miedema came on in the 60th minute, but ended the contest with team-high totals for shots on target (three) and touches in the opposition box (six).

"We've got to look at the team in the sense of playing a top team every three days," said Cushing of benching Miedema.

"I'll probably do it again at the weekend, maybe not with Viv but maybe with somebody else.

"You have to be at it against Chelsea and you have to be fresh because they're a top, top team so I had a plan tonight in terms of trying to get the best out of her in a short period of time. I've got to find the next plan for the next one!"
