Magda Linette stunned Coco Gauff at the Miami Open, holding her nerve to reach the quarter-finals with a straight-sets win.

Linette is into just her second quarter-final in WTA 1000 events and needed just over an hour and a half to earn a 6-4 6-4 triumph against the world number three.

The Pole got the early advantage, going a break up in the third game, and though Gauff stood her ground for the rest of the first set, there was no way back in.

The second set was a much tighter affair. It took until the second game for Gauff to get her first break point pf the match, and she converted on the second attempt.

However, Linette turned the tide, striking with back-to-back breaks of serve to put herself in the driving seat once more.

Gauff was able to level the score, but she struggled against Linette's front-footed approach and suffered her fourth break on the match as the 33-year-old strung together a second three-game winning run to book her place in the next round.

Her reward is a match against Jasmine Paolini, who also knocked out a former grand slam winner in Naomi Osaka to reach the final eight.

Data Debrief: Linette puts down marker

Linette has not had a lot of luck in matches against opponents ranked in the top 10, with this her first win against such opponents since beating Paolini in Beijing last year.

She had a 5-28 record in those matches, but by improving that slightly, she also put right a wrong. Her only previous WTA 1000 quarter-final saw her face Gauff in Wuhan last year, a match which she lost.

Since 2000, Linette is the third-oldest player to reach their maiden women's singles quarter-final at the Miami Open, after Mirjana Lucic (2017) and Hsieh Su-Wei (2019).
