Head: Australia could take more 'flexible' approach to batting order against Sri Lanka
Australia are yet to settle on their top order for the first Test against Sri Lanka but are not ruling out a completely different approach.
Travis Head revealed Australia are debating whether to use a more "flexible" batting order as they look to combat their selection dilemma.
Australia face Sri Lanka in a two-Test series, with the first beginning on January 29, but have not settled on their order yet, with Head and Sam Konstas both options to partner Usman Khawaja as a starter.
19-year-old Konstas impressed during Australia's 3-1 win over India, hitting 113 runs over four innings. On his debut, he finished on 60, in a knock that included six fours and two sixes, including the first six off Jasprit Bumrah in the longest format since Cameron Green in 2021, and only the sixth off him overall.
Head, meanwhile, has averaged 43.1 runs since his Test debut in 2018, and against India, plundered two centuries and one half-century, as one of the middle order.
During Australia's last subcontinent to India in 2023, Head averaged 55.75 runs as David Warner's injury replacement in two and a half Tests.
The 31-year-old says Australia have been discussing a potential shift in their batting order mid-game if the pitch conditions allow.
"I don't know where I'm going to bat at this stage," Head said ahead of Monday's main training session for the first Test.
"We'll see how that wicket plays out over the next couple of days.
"It's been a topic of conversation for the last little bit in this team on whether the Australian first innings, second innings, why doesn't the order change?
"Why can't we be flexible? What moves? How can we be brave? That hasn't played out as such yet. Is this the tour to do it? We'll wait and see."
Following the two Tests against Sri Lanka, Australia will also face them in two ODI matches, on February 12 and 14.
