Bumrah, Mandhana and Azmatullah win ICC Cricketer of the Year awards

Jasprit Bumrah has bagged the ICC Test Cricketer of the Year award to become the first Indian since Virat Kohli in 2018 to achieve the feat.

Jasprit Bumrah has been named the ICC Men's Test Cricketer of the Year after a 2024 that saw the India fast bowler pick up 71 wickets at an average of 14.92.

Afghanistan all-rounder Azmatullah Omarzai won the Men's ODI Cricketer of the Year honour while Bumrah's compatriot Smriti Mandhana took the honour in the women's one-day format.

Bumrah beat competition from England duo Harry Brook and Joe Root as well as Sri Lanka's Kamindu Mendis to become the first Indian since Virat Kohli in 2018 to secure the award.

His 71-wicket haul saw him finish well clear of second-place GUs Atkinson (52), while he is just the fourth Indian bowler to take more than 70 wickets in a calendar year after Ravichandran Ashwin, Anil Kumble and Kapil Dev.

The 31-year-old is the top-ranked bowler in the longest format of the game and overtook Ravichandran Ashwin's 904 rating points to become the best-ranked Indian in the rankings earlier this year.

"Test cricket has always been a format I hold close to my heart, and to be recognised on this platform is truly special," Bumrah said in a statement.

"Representing India is a privilege I deeply cherish, and knowing my efforts bring smiles to people around the world makes this journey even more special."

He guided his nation to series wins against England and Bangladesh and was the player of the series against Australia as he took 32 wickets from the five Tests.

Meanwhile, 28-year-old Mandhana won her second Women's ODI Cricket of the Year prize after scoring 747 runs in 13 innings for India during the calendar year, at an average of 57.86 and strike rate of 95.15.

Scoring four ODI centuries, the left-hand batter finished the year ahead of Laura Wolvaardt (697), Tammy Beaumont (554) and Hayley Matthews (469) in terms of runs scored.

"I remember how special it was to have won this award in 2018 for the first time. It had fuelled my ambition to do well for my country. And now, it will motivate me even more to strive for excellence," Mandhana said.

Azmatullah bagged 417 runs and 17 wickets in 14 matches for Afghanistan, scoring at an average of 52.12 and taking wickets at 20.47 to help them claim series wins against Ireland, South Africa, Bangladesh and Zimbabwe.

Arshdeep Singh was also announced as the T20I Cricketer of the Year after helping end India's wait for a major trophy as they won the T20 World Cup in June.
