Bompastor: Lack of energy no excuse for Chelsea's slip-up at West Ham
Chelsea threw away a 2-0 lead against West Ham on Sunday, and Sonia Bompastor said a lack of energy was no excuse for the Blues.
Sonia Bompastor said Chelsea's "crazy" schedule cannot be used as an excuse for throwing away a 2-0 lead against West Ham.
The Hammers became just the third team to take points off Chelsea in the Women's Super League this term as they fought back to secure an unlikely draw on Sunday.
Shekiera Martinez netted twice for West Ham, with her equaliser coming in the 91st minute, after Chelsea had raced into an early 2-0 lead courtesy of goals from Maika Hamano and Agnes Beever-Jones.
Chelsea had not drawn their previous 90 WSL matches in which they had led by more than one goal.
Sunday's game came hot on the heels of Chelsea beating Manchester City 3-0 in the Women's Champions League to complete a 3-2 comeback victory on aggregate.
The Blues had played eight times in four weeks, including four consecutive meetings with City across three competitions, but Bompastor did not want to use fatigue as an excuse.
She told Sky Sports: "This block of fixtures has been crazy. Eight games in 28 days.
"We travelled a lot, we played four games in a row against Manchester City where the players left everything on the pitch.
"It is hard to have the energy, but at Chelsea, we have enough depth and quality to finish this block of fixtures with a better result.
"We conceded too many situations defensively, but when you look at the bigger picture, we are six points ahead of the second-placed team.
"Every team would wish to be in our position."

Chelsea are surging towards the WSL title, and despite the slip-up, remain six points clear of Arsenal and Manchester United with just four games remaining.
Should they win each of their remaining league games, they will surpass the record points tally in a single WSL season (58, set by Chelsea in 2022-23), while they are aiming to become the sixth different team to go through a WSL or Spring Series campaign undefeated, and the first since the Blues did so under Emma Hayes in 2019-20.
Speaking to Chelsea's media channels, Bompastor added: "Obviously, it's frustrating. I think if you analyse the game – even thought I didn't watch the game back yet – I think we created a lot of opportunities. In the first half, especially in the first 30 minutes, we could have scored maybe three or four goals.
"I think if we were able to do that, especially in the first 30 minutes, the game was over. But again, I think I already said that in some previous games, when you are not able to be clinical enough, you just give some hope to the opposition, especially in the last 15 minutes of the first half.
"We dropped the intensity a little bit and conceded the goal because we were not switched on enough from a throw-in. And the second half was not good enough in terms of performance from our side."
Bompastor is backed up by the match stats, with Chelsea having 24 shots and accumulating 2.53 expected goals.
However, only eight of those attempts, worth 0.73 xG, came after the break.
Chelsea face Liverpool in the Women's FA Cup semi-finals after the international break, before they take on Barcelona in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final.
