Allen: Cavs trying to 'do something special'

The Cleveland Cavaliers have won 60 games in an NBA season for just the third time in their history and the first time without LeBron James.

Jarrett Allen says the Cleveland Cavaliers are trying to "do something special" after they got their 60th win of the NBA season, the first time they have done so without LeBron James.

The Cavs ran out 127-122 winners over the Los Angeles Clippers, holding off a late comeback to reach the 60-win mark for just the third time in their franchise history.

The last time they did so was in back-to-back seasons in 2008-09 and 2009-10, during James' first stint with the team.

Allen helped steer Cleveland to victory, getting 25 points and 12 rebounds for his 39th double-double of the season, and they also received 24 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists from Donovan Mitchell and 22 points from Evan Mobley.

The Cavaliers are 4.5 games ahead of the Boston Celtics as they aim to clinch the top seed in the Eastern Conference, and Allen is excited about what they can achieve this season.

"Whether we like it or not, LeBron is the face of this city and has done so much," Allen said.

"It is tough to break away from that notion or the records, the first to do it with LeBron here. We're trying to do something special, and hopefully we can.

"Everything since I have been here has been a stepping stone. Something has improved every year."

The Cavaliers had suffered a 133-122 loss to the Detroit Pistons on Friday, a defeat that left coach Kenny Atkinson frustrated.

Atkinson is in his first season with the franchise and explained that he had wanted to make small improvements from last year, when Cleveland reached the playoffs, beating the Orlando Magic in the first round in the East.

"My internal goal was how we could improve from last year, even if it was for one or two wins," said Atkinson, who became the 13th coach in NBA history with 60 wins in his first season with a new team.

"For this team to take it to another level and shatter that says a lot. We still can add to that. We have to celebrate this. It's not the end goal, but take a deep breath and celebrate.

"If I had priorities, I would rather be playing well and having everyone healthy [than getting top seed].

"Hopefully, the first seed will come with that, and I think it will. We have to keep the philosophy and mentality that we're growing."
