Aberdeen 2-2 Rangers: Hagi puts Celtic's title celebrations on ice with last-gasp equaliser

Celtic's title celebrations were put on ice as a 96th-minute Ianis Hagi equaliser at Aberdeen mathematically kept Rangers in the race.

Ten-man Rangers scored late on to draw 2-2 with Aberdeen and delay Celtic's Scottish Premiership title celebrations.

Celtic were moments away from securing their 55th top-flight crown - which would see them match Rangers' record haul - but Ianis Hagi rescued a point for Barry Ferguson's team deep in second-half stoppage time on Sunday.

That means Rangers stay within 15 points of Brendan Rodgers' team with five games remaining.

Leighton Clarkson opened the scoring for Aberdeen in the 31st minute, whipping a wonderful free-kick into the top left corner despite a hand from Liam Kelly.

It was a difficult day for the Rangers shot-stopper after his penalty heroics in Thursday’s Europa League clash with Athletic Bilbao.

Rangers' frustration was compounded when Ross McCausland received a second yellow card for a needless foul on Topi Keskinen, before Pape Gueye delivered what looked set to be a killer blow on the stroke of half-time, when he tucked in following scintillating wing play from Shayden Morris.

But as Celtic fans surely began their celebrations, Rangers flew out of the blocks after the restart.

Rangers' top scorer Hamza Igamane twisted and turned past a couple of Aberdeen defenders before sending a low strike into the bottom corner to halve the deficit.

Kevin Nisbet thought he had put the game to bed in the 88th minute, as he slammed home from a corner scramble, but VAR disallowed the goal for accidental handball.

And Rangers made their fortune count as Hagi swept home a wonderful equaliser with virtually the last kick of the game.

Data Debrief: Old Firm title battle not quite levelled up

For now, then, Rangers remain one title ahead of their fierce rivals, but that will change soon enough.

Rangers have now fallen two goals behind in seven of their last 10 games, but their fast start after the interval was typical of a side that have scored 10 goals in the first 15 minutes of the second half this season, with only Celtic (14) bettering that.

It is the second time in as many matches that Rangers have had a player sent off. They were reduced to 10 against Bilbao on Thursday, and then McCausland saw red here for the first time in his Premiership career.

Aberdeen are now unbeaten in their last four home league games against Rangers (W2 D2), but they will feel it should have been much more, having generated 2.25 expected goals to their visitors' 0.96.
