Carlos Alcaraz will not feature at the Madrid Open due to injury, the four-time grand slam champion confirmed on Thursday.

Alcaraz, who triumphed at the Monte-Carlo Masters earlier this month, reached the final of the Barcelona Open last week.

However, he went down in straight sets to Holger Rune and appeared to be struggling in Sunday's showpiece match.

And the Spaniard has now withdrawn from his home ATP Masters 1000 tournament.

Alcaraz is hoping to return in time to feature at the Italian Open, which is also set to mark the comeback of world number one Jannik Sinner from his three-month suspension.

The 21-year-old, who is the reigning French Open champion, confirmed he is struggling with an adductor issue and a muscle injury in his left leg, in what is far from ideal preparation for his title defence at Roland-Garros.

Alcaraz, who has dropped back down to third in the ATP rankings following his defeat in Barcelona and Alexander Zverev's victory in Munich, has a 24-5 record for the season, having won two titles.

He is a two-time champion in Madrid, having triumphed in the Spanish capital in 2022 and 2023.
