Jude's last-minute bicycle kick came to England's rescue. Elimination was on the cards but the English number 10 made the difference between winners and losers in a match where they did not improve their game compared to previous matches. Without game, without automatisms and with a midfield where the pair formed by Jude Bellingham and Declan Rice was lacking a third man. 

Alexander Arnold, a converted full-back, does not play as number 8. He is not the one who plays and makes people play, the motivator.  A number 8 is missing as Bellingham is the number 10, and despite not being loose on his legs he is making a difference and Rice is the number 6 who scores the most miles in the competition. He is also the one who has recovered the most balls.  

Mainoo has come in as a third midfielder, but the English are not playing, they are holding out. The criticism continues for Southgate and his team, and the call-up has left the squad with only one left-back, Luke Shaw, who is too cautious.  Up front, no one understands the exclusion of Jack Grealish unless it is for reasons off the field, and Foden's fluency and determination cannot find partners with the same change of pace and similar speed of play. England is unconvincing.
