Barnes 'joining the petition' for 'unbelievable' Murphy to earn England call-up

Jacob Murphy has been directly involved in 17 goals in his last 18 Premier League games, after his goal and assist against Crystal Palace.

Harvey Barnes joked he is "joining the petition" for Newcastle United team-mate Jacob Murphy to receive an England call-up, following another impressive display during the Magpies' rout of Crystal Palace.

Newcastle were 5-0 winners at St James' Park, as they recorded their biggest Premier League victory on home soil since beating Tottenham 6-1 in April 2023.

Murphy played a starring role for the hosts, opening the scoring with a powerful drive into the roof of the net from a tight angle, before crossing for Fabian Schar to head home the fourth goal.

The winger has now been directly involved in 17 goals across his last 18 Premier League games (eight goals, nine assists), as many as in his previous 59 appearances in the competition.

Murphy’s 19 goal involvements this season is as many as in his previous three campaigns combined, leading to supporters claiming he should be in the plans of England head coach Thomas Tuchel.

"He's playing unbelievable," Barnes, who scored Newcastle's third goal, told Premier League Productions. "He's such a character in the changing room. And deserves everything he's getting. I'm joining the petition!

The Magpies climbed above Nottingham Forest to third place and have now scored nine goals in two Premier League games, following their 4-1 win over Manchester United at St James' Park on Sunday.

"We spoke the other day about building on results," Barnes added. "Today was a perfect example. We knew it was going to be a test tonight. We started the game so well and got a comfortable lead.

"This is where we want to be. We've got ourselves in a really good position."

Murphy urged Newcastle to "keep going" in their quest to secure Champions League football for the second time in three seasons, while providing an update on head coach Eddie Howe, who was absent again as he recovers from pneumonia.

"We're in a great place at the moment," he told Sky Sports. "We knew it would be difficult if we didn't start fast. We started really quickly and got our reward.

"We always knew that the first goal was going to be really important, so I'm happy to get it and happy to start off so well.

"We're not studying [the table] too hard. We knew a win today would put us in a good position. We're in a good position, but there's a lot more weekends to go, and a lot can change, so we have to stay on top of our game and keep going.

"Everyone has shared texts with [Eddie], and he's on the road to recovery. We're missing him, but once again, I think we put a performance in that he'd be really proud of.

"There are so many we need to thank for tonight as well that are continuing the great work the gaffer does with us."

"We spoke pre-game about maintaining the standards we set ourselves at the weekend, about being really aggressive and on the front foot," Magpies assistant Jason Tindall told BBC Match of the Day.

"I thought the players went about that and executed that brilliantly. We're confident, we've had a good run of results and we have to remain level-headed and work hard every day to go out and deliver performances."
