RCB break Wankhede jinx with nervy win over Mumbai Indians

Royal Challengers Bengaluru registered their first win at Wankhede Stadium in nearly a decade, beating Mumbai Indians in a thriller.

An ensemble cast performance from Royal Challengers Bengaluru saw Rajat Patidar's team edge out a 12-run win over Mumbai Indians on Monday.

Mumbai's Hardik Pandya won the toss and sent RCB in to bat, but Virat Kohli (67) and Devdutt Padikkal (37) got off to a flying start in a partnership worth 91 runs.

Patidar (64) and Jitesh Sharma (40 not out) then combined brilliantly to power RCB to a mammoth total of 221-5 from their 20 overs, despite minimal contributions from Phil Salt (4) and Liam Livingstone (0).

Jasprit Bumrah suffered an indifferent return to cricket after a long injury lay-off, managing 0-29 from his four overs.

In the second innings, Rohit Sharma (17) showed plenty of intent but saw his leg stump flattened by Yash Dayal in the second over.

Ryan Rickleton followed soon after as Mumbai’s powerplay ended meekly at 54-2. Their middle order then showed little resistance as Will Jacks (22) and Suryakumar Yadav (28) holed out trying to increase the scoring rate.

However, Tilak Varma (56) and Hardik Pandya (42) stitched together a much-needed partnership of 89 runs from 34 balls to give Mumbai hope going into the back end of the innings.

Hardik Pandya’s 42 runs came from just 15 balls at an incredible strike rate of 280, tilting the game in Mumbai’s favour, but RCB’s bowlers Josh Hazlewood (2-37) and Krunal Pandya (4-45) held their nerve.

Krunal Pandya took three wickets in the last over to seal the win for RCB as Mumbai ended 12 runs short at 209-9.

The Royal Challengers remain third in the table, level on points with Delhi Capitals and Gujarat Titans, while Mumbai stay stuck in eighth place with just two points.

Data debrief: Kohli’s quickfire knock helps RCB to third away win

Kohli scored his fastest IPL half-century in seven years, reaching the milestone in 29 balls on Monday. The former India and RCB captain ended with 67 runs off 42 balls at a strike rate of 159.52.

His previous fastest fifty came in this season’s opener against the Kolkata Knight Riders, where he reached the milestone in 30 balls, ending with 59 off 36 at a strike rate of 163.88.

Kohli’s knock on Monday helped the Royal Challengers to break yet another away ground jinx, winning at Wankhede for the first time since 2015.

Earlier this season, RCB broke an even longer away jinx, beating the Chennai Super Kings at Chepauk for the first time since the IPL’s inaugural season in 2008.
