'One day' - Pochettino hopeful of Spurs return

Mauricio Pochettino has expressed his desire to one day return to Tottenham Hotspur, but said his full focus was on the 2026 World Cup.

Mauricio Pochettino has revealed that he would "one day" like to return to Tottenham Hotspur six years after he was sacked in north London.

Pochettino managed Spurs for five-and-a-half years from 2014 to 2019, guiding the club to the Champions League final in his last year at the club.

He was relieved of his duties five months after their defeat to Liverpool in Madrid, and went on to manage Paris Saint-Germain and Spurs' London rivals, Chelsea.

Pochettino took charge of 293 matches across all competitions with Spurs, the most of his managerial career, winning 160 of those games (D60 L73).

Indeed, of the Spurs managers to have taken charge of at least 100 games with the club, Pochettino boasts the best winning percentage in the club's history (54.27%).

The Argentine's latest coaching venture has seen him take the reins with the United States national team, with the Stars and Stripes preparing for the 2026 World Cup.

However, Pochettino's fondness for Spurs has not gone away, and he has said that he is still open to a north London return in the future, but not just yet.

"Look, when I left the club, I always remember one interview I said I would like one day to come back to Tottenham and that is, of course…I am in the USA, I am not going to no, I'm not going to talk about that," Pochettino said in an interview with Sky Sports.

"But what I said then is still, after six years or five years, I still feel in my heart that, yes, I would like one day to come back. We see the timing, like Daniel said."

Since Pochettino's departure, Spurs have had four different managers, with Jose Mourinho taking over in 2019 before being sacked 17 months later, which remarkably came just days before their EFL Cup final against Manchester City.

Nuno Espirito Santo and Antonio Conte followed, before the club appointed current coach Ange Postecoglou, who is enduring a difficult second season in north London.

Spurs are 14th in the Premier League table, with a defeat to Fulham on Sunday their 15th of the campaign, their joint-most at this stage in a top-flight season since 1997-98.

Postecoglou's position has been a topic of conversation for much of the campaign, and Pochettino revealed that he is still in contact with Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy despite their difficult ending.

"You're talking about two different sides, professional and personal, and I've seen always the appreciation in between both," he said.

"He is always there, and he's going to be there. It's another thing to take professional decisions. It's true after nearly six years with all that we lived together, it was tough because of all the ups and downs and emotional things that we lived.

"I've seen always it's difficult in football that that doesn't affect all this type of situation in your relationship. For us, we split very well.

"One thing was professional, another personal and now, like the day after we left Tottenham, we keep always a very, very good relationship."
