England crumble as record-breaking Sharma leads India charge

Abhishek Sharma put on a stunning display in the final match of India's series against England, setting them on their way to a record win.

Abhishek Sharma's superb century led India's charge to a 150-run victory over sorry England, who slumped to a record T20I defeat in Mumbai.

India, who won the series 4-1, set a mammoth target for England, but a lacklustre display saw the tourists fail to break into triple figures on Sunday.

Sanju Samson (16) fell in the second over, but his fellow opener Sharma shone, plundering 135 from just 54 balls – including 13 sixes and seven fours. He hit his half-century in the space of 17 deliveries before bringing up his century in 37, helping India to 95-1 after the powerplay.

Brydon Carse (3-38) stepped up the pressure shortly after though, taking the wickets of Tilak Varma (24), Suryakumar Yadav (two) and Shivam Dube (30). Jofra Archer eventually caught Sharma from an Adil Rashid delivery at the end of the 18th over, but the damage was already done as India finished on 247-9.

Jos Buttler's side crumbled in their attempts to reach their target and were skittled out for only 97 in just 10.3 overs, with Phil Salt responsible for 55 of those runs.

Jamie Overton was the only other player to reach double figures (10) as Mohammed Shami (3-25) and Sharma (2-3) ripped through England's batters with the minimum of fuss.

Mark Wood was the last to fall in the tourists' dismal display as Brendon McCullum's first white-ball assignment ended in England's heaviest T20I defeat.

Data Debrief: A day to remember for Sharma

It was some stand by Sharma, who had all but dampened England's hopes of a consolation win before they even got to bat.

His 135 runs is the highest individual score for India in T20Is, surpassing Shubman Gill's 126, while his 13 sixes also set a national record for the most in an innings in T20Is, beating Rohit Sharma's 10.

Sharma struck the second-fastest century for India (37 balls), with only Rohit (35) doing so in fewer deliveries.

As for England, the 150-run defeat margin is their largest by runs in this format.

Their previous heaviest loss was by 90 runs, also against India, in 2012. This marked the shortest all-out innings for England in men's T20Is – their previous shortest was 14.4 overs, and that also came against India in 2012.
