Brilliant Buttler sends Gujarat Titans top of IPL

Jos Buttler plundered 97 as Gujarat Titans edged out Delhi Capitals to move into first place in the Indian Premier League.

Gujarat Titans saw off Delhi Capitals by seven wickets in a top-of-the-table clash in the Indian Premier League on Saturday.

Jos Buttler played a starring role, with an unbeaten 97 propelling the Titans to a victory they sealed with just four deliveries remaining.

The former England white-ball captain put on a 119-run partnership with Sherfane Rutherford, who scored 43.

Buttler and Rutherford were needed after openers Shubman Gill (seven) and Sai Sudharsan (36) fell, with Delhi defending a target of 204.

Four of the Capitals' top six batters got into the thirties, with captain Axar Patel leading the way with 39.

Prasidh Krishna did the most damage with the ball for the Titans, taking 4-41, sending Karun Nair (31), KL Rahul (28), Patel and Vipraj Nigam (0) packing, with the latter two wickets coming in succession in the 18th over, as Delhi were limited to 203-8.

But after Sudharsan had got the Titans' chase off to a decent start, Buttler and Rutherford picked up the mantle, and Gujarat were on 193 by the time the latter found Mitchell Starc in the field from Mukesh Kumar's bowling.

Buttler did not get the chance to complete his century, as Rahul Tewatia (11) came in to seal the win, sending Starc for a six and then a four to move the Titans into top spot in the standings.

Data Debrief: Buttler and Rutherford make new ground

The Titans were only founded in 2021, so there is always a decent chance of them setting new team records in the IPL.

That was the case for Buttler and Rutherford, with their partnership the highest for a third wicket in Gujarat's short history.

Buttler's 97 was his highest score of the season so far, and he has now hit three half-centuries this season, meaning he is well on course to match or surpass his career-best five, set in 2018.

His stand included 11 fours and four sixes. He has already struck 13 maximums in seven games in 2025, more than he managed across 11 appearances in the 2024 IPL (12).
