Liverpool 2-1 Lille: Elliott sends Reds into Champions League last 16
Liverpool clinched a top-eight finish in the Champions League's first phase by beating Lille 2-1 at Anfield on Tuesday.
Harvey Elliott came off the bench to score the winner as Liverpool booked their place in the last 16 of the Champions League with a 2-1 victory over 10-man Lille at Anfield.
Arne Slot's Reds maintained their 100% record in Europe's premier club competition this term, sitting top of the 36-team table with 21 points, three clear of second-placed Barcelona with one game remaining.
Mohamed Salah got them up and running with his 50th European goal for the club in the 34th minute, sprinting onto a long pass from Curtis Jones before curling a shot beyond goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier.
Despite being reduced to 10 men when Aissa Mandi was shown his second yellow card in the 59th minute, Lille equalised three minutes later as Jonathan David hammered home after Hakon Arnar Haraldsson saw a shot blocked.
But Liverpool would not be denied and they quickly regained the lead in the 67th minute.
Having replaced Ryan Gravenberch at half-time, Elliott pounced on the edge of the box to drill in an effort that deflected in off Ngal'ayel Mukau, and Lille were unable to respond for a second time.
Data Debrief: Fortress Anfield still standing
Liverpool have won all four of their home games in the Champions League's new league phase. The last visiting team to avoid defeat in the group stage or league phase of the competition was Atalanta, who managed a 2-0 victory on Merseyside back in November 2020.
Since then, Liverpool have won 11 straight matches in the first phase of Europe's top club competition, scoring 24 goals and only conceding four.
David's goal did prevent them from becoming just the second team in European Cup/Champions League history to win six straight games to nil, though.
Leeds United (in 1969-70) remain the only club to achieve that feat.
