Irving seeking eligibility change to Australia ahead of 2028 Olympics

Team USA could lose one of their previous gold-medal winners if Kyrie Irving's eligibility plans to switch to Australia go through.

Kyrie Irving is intent on switching from Team USA to represent Team Australia in time for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

Irving was born in Melbourne, Australia, but represented the United States as they won the gold medal at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games.

The Dallas Mavericks star was not selected for either of the past two Team USA rosters, however, watching on as the Americans claimed the top prize at last year's Games in Paris.

Speaking at the All-Star Weekend in NBA, the 32-year-old admitted he is attempting to gain eligibility for his country of birth.

"We're in the process of that right now," Irving said. "Just trying to figure out what's going to be the best route for me to be eligible. There's a lot of paperwork in between that."

Dyson Daniels, Josh Giddey, Ben Simmons, Dante Exum and Josh Green are among Irving's potential Australia team-mates, should he gain eligibility and be selected for the 2028 Games.

However, Irving would need approval from USA Basketball, FIBA and Basketball Australia to secure his eligibility switch.

"Obviously, Team USA still has a decision to make," Irving said. "But for me, I'm just trying to do what's best.

"Honestly, if I can be an Aussie at one point in my career and play for the Australian team, that would be great."

It would be a welcome boost for an Australian side that won the bronze medal at the 2020 Tokyo Games but finished sixth overall in Paris after an overtime loss to Serbia in the quarter-finals.

There are no guarantees over a change, though, Klay Thompson was in discussions last year around representing the Bahamas, the country of his father's birth, but failed in switching from Team USA.

Irving would also be 36 by the next Olympics and it remains to be seen over Australia's selection policy, considering their head coach position has not yet been filled since Brian Goorjian stepped down after their Paris attempts.
