Andreeva becomes youngest WTA 1000 winner with Dubai triumph

Mirra Andreeva rounded off an impressive run at the Dubai Tennis Championships by clinching the trophy after a straight-sets win.

Mirra Andreeva became the youngest player to win a WTA 1000 event after beating Clara Tauson in straight sets in the Dubai Tennis Championships final.

The 17-year-old, playing in a final in this format for the first time, outlasted the Dane in one hour and 46 minutes as she triumphed 7-6 (7-1) 6-1 on Saturday.

Tauson started strong, racing into a 2-0 lead in the opener, but the momentum soon switched as Andreeva shook off any early nerves.

The Russian had the chance to serve out the set at 5-4 up, but Tauson rallied, breaking at the second attempt before forcing the tie-break, but as she began to struggle with an injury, she failed to match Andreeva, who reeled off six straight points in the tie-break.

The pair both held serve to start the second set, but it was all Andreeva after that as she really found her groove. She earned back-to-back breaks, while facing three break points in the service game sandwiched between, as she racked up a five-game winning streak.

Tauson, who struggled to find her range throughout the match, defended the first championship point she faced, but went too long on the next as Andreeva claimed the victory.

Data Debrief: History maker

Andreeva made her mark in Dubai - having knocked out Iga Swiatek in the quarter-finals, she then made it to the final of a WTA 1000 event for the first time in her career, becoming the youngest player to ever do so.

At 17 years and 299 days, she is also now the youngest player to win an event in the format, in what was her 11th main-draw appearance - the fewest since Paula Badosa (10) at Indian Wells in 2021.

Her victory also means she will move into the top 10 of the WTA Rankings. At 17 years and 301 days, Andreeva, on Monday, will become the youngest player to be part of the top 10 since Nicole Vaidisova (17 years and 106 days) on August 7, 2006.
